Jethro Tull is a British rock band formed in 1967 in Blackpool, Lancashire, led by Ian Anderson – singer, flautist, and principal composer, and the band's only constant member since its founding. Anderson, born in 1947 in Dunfermline, Scotland, and raised in Edinburgh and Blackpool, assembled Jethro Tull from the merger of two blues groups: The John Evan Band and McGregor's Engine. The band played their first gig under the Jethro Tull name at London's famous Marquee Club in February 1968.
Their debut album *This Was* (1968) was rooted in the blues; *Stand Up* (1969) topped the UK charts. Landmark releases such as *Aqualung* (1971) and *Thick as a Brick* (1972) brought international acclaim and established the band as pioneers of progressive rock. Their signature sound blends heavy rock, flute-led folk melodies, blues, and classical influences. In 1987, *Crest of a Knave* earned the band a Grammy Award. Across more than five decades, Jethro Tull released around 30 studio albums and sold over 60 million records worldwide, on labels including Island, Chrysalis, Warner Bros., and Inside Out Music. After a hiatus from 2011 to 2017, the band remains active, performing over 100 concerts per year globally.
