Joch de Ministrils

Palma, Spanienearly-music · medieval · renaissance · baroque
Joch de Ministrils is one of Mallorca's oldest musical formations, with roots stretching back to the 13th century and the conquest of the island by King Jaume I. The royal court brought with it the Ministrils – musicians hired to enliven banquets and courtly entertainment while lending solemnity to civil, military and religious occasions. Their direct forerunners were the medieval joglars, who originally entertained at banquets. The ensemble is documented from 1595, closely tied to the Corpus Christi celebrations at the Seu de Mallorca, before disbanding in 1879. In 2001, the Consell de Mallorca and the Teatre Principal de Palma revived the group, and a full restoration has been underway since 2024. Playing historical instruments such as cornamusas (bagpipes), flabiols, tarotes, bombards, bajones, sacabutxos, cornetes and drums, Joch de Ministrils brings medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music back to life. The ensemble performs at ceremonial occasions such as the Diada de Mallorca and the Dia de les Illes Balears, with recent appearances at the Teatre Principal de Palma in 2024 and at La Sala Magna in Sóller in 2026 – a living piece of Mallorcan musical heritage.
