The Joch de Ministrils del Consell de Mallorca is one of the island's oldest musical formations, with roots stretching back to the 13th century and the Catalan Conquest under King Jaume I. At that time, court jesters (joglars) entertained banquets, ceremonies and military events. Over the centuries they evolved into the Ministrils – professional musicians who lent solemnity to official civil, religious and military occasions, including processions, receptions and sessions of the Gran i General Consell. The group is documented from 1595, closely linked to the Corpus Christi celebrations at the Seu de Mallorca, and dissolved in 1879.
In 2001, the Consell de Mallorca and the Teatre Principal de Palma revived the ensemble for the first time. After another period of inactivity, a full restoration took place from 2024 onwards. Today the Ministrils perform on historical instruments including cornamusas (bagpipes), flabiols, tarotes, bombards, bajones, sacabutxos, cornetes and drums – covering a sonic spectrum from Renaissance to Baroque. You can encounter them at ceremonial events such as the Diada de Mallorca, the Dia de les Illes Balears, Dijous Sant and the Colcada de Santa Catalina Tomàs – living Mallorcan heritage at the heart of the island.
