José González, born on 31 July 1978 in the Haga district of Gothenburg, is a Swedish indie folk singer-songwriter and guitarist of Argentine descent. His parents fled Argentina after the 1976 military coup and were granted asylum in Sweden. González started out in hardcore bands during the 1990s while studying biochemistry at the University of Gothenburg, and co-founded the indie-rock outfit Junip with Tobias Winterkorn in the late 1990s. He launched his solo career with the entirely acoustic debut album "Veneer" on Imperial Recordings in 2003 – an intimate record drawing on Latin folk, classical guitar, and post-punk, with touchstones including Nick Drake, Paul Simon, and Elliott Smith. His fingerpicked cover of The Knife's "Heartbeats" brought him widespread recognition. In 2006 he contributed guest vocals to Zero 7's album "The Garden", alongside Sia. As of 2026 he has released five solo studio albums, including "In Our Nature". His understated, acoustic-centred sound has established him as one of Europe's most distinctive indie folk voices.
