Loquillo – real name José María Sanz Beltrán – was born on 21 December 1960 in the working-class Clot neighbourhood of Barcelona and is regarded as one of the defining voices of rock sung in Spanish. His career took off in 1980 when a representative of media company Cúspide spotted him and arranged his first recordings with Los Intocables. In 1983 he formed Loquillo y los Trogloditas, a band whose blend of rockabilly guitar, punk attitude and sharp lyrics – many co-written with Sabino Méndez – shaped the urban Spanish rock of the decade. Tracks such as "Cadillac solitario" and "El ritmo del garaje" became classics. After the Trogloditas disbanded in 2008, Loquillo committed fully to his solo career: 2015's "Código Rocker", recorded with the Nu Niles, reached number one in Spain, as did the follow-up "Viento del Este" (2016). His collaborations include Bunbury, Andrés Calamaro, Joan Manuel Serrat and Miguel Ríos. He also composed the soundtrack for the TV series "Crematorio". With his leather-jacket image and distinctively rough voice, Loquillo remains one of Spain's most recognised rock artists.
