Trío Los Panchos are among the most influential musical acts in Latin American history. Founded on 14 May 1944 at the Hispanic Theatre in New York City by Mexican musicians Alfredo Gil and Chucho Navarro and Puerto Rican vocalist Hernando Avilés, they became the leading exporters of the romantic bolero. Gil invented the requinto — a smaller, higher-tuned guitar — which became the hallmark of their perfectly blended three-voice sound.
After early successes in New York, including a performance at Radio City Music Hall, the trio relocated to Mexico City in 1948, then the capital of Latin music. They were embraced by the influential XEW-AM radio station and went on to appear in around 50 films, mostly during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema.
Their greatest international crossover came with the albums *Amor* (1964) and *More Amor* (1965), featuring American singer Eydie Gormé singing in Spanish. The 1994 compilation *24 Grandes Canciones* with Gormé reached No. 31 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart. Recording for Columbia Records and Seeco, they sold millions of records across Latin America, the United States, and Japan. Active since 1944, Los Panchos continue to carry their legacy forward to this day.
