Mägo de Oz – Spanish for "Wizard of Oz", complete with a metal umlaut – is a folk metal band from the Begoña neighbourhood of Madrid, founded in 1988 by drummer Txus di Fellatio. Starting out as a punk/hard-rock outfit, they quickly evolved into one of Spain's most distinctive metal acts, weaving Celtic melodies, violin, flute, bagpipes, and accordion together with distorted guitars and progressive song structures.
Their self-titled debut arrived in 1994; wider recognition came with *La Leyenda de la Mancha* (1998) and the epic double album *Finisterra* (2000), re-recorded in 2015 as *Finisterra Opera Rock* featuring soprano Patricia Tapia and numerous collaborators. The *Gaia* trilogy (2003–2009) cemented their reputation for conceptually ambitious rock operas. In 2017 the universally acclaimed live album *Diabulus in Opera* was released, recorded with a full orchestra and choir; their 30th-anniversary concert in 2018 sold out the WiZink Center in Madrid. Most recently, *Alicia en el Metalverso* (2024) introduced new vocalist Rafa Blas, a former winner of the Spanish version of *The Voice*. Signed to Warner/Dro Atlantic, Mägo de Oz remain one of the most successful and debated metal bands in Spain.
