Major Lazer

Los Angeles, USAelectronic · dancehall · reggae · house
Major Lazer is an American EDM collective from Los Angeles, founded in 2008 by producer Diplo (Thomas Pentz, originally from Philadelphia) and British producer Switch — the two having previously worked together with M.I.A. After Switch's departure in 2011 and a stint with Jillionaire, the current trio consists of Diplo, Walshy Fire, and Ape Drums. Their debut album "Guns Don't Kill People… Lazers Do" (2009, Downtown Records) was recorded in three weeks at the legendary Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston, Jamaica, featuring guests such as Vybz Kartel, Busy Signal, and Santigold — a groundbreaking dancehall-reggae-electronic crossover. Their track "Pon De Floor" went on to inspire Beyoncé's global hit "Run the World (Girls)" (2011). With "Free the Universe" (2013, Secretly Canadian) and especially "Peace Is the Mission" (2015), Major Lazer achieved global superstar status: the platinum single "Lean On" (feat. DJ Snake & MØ) and "Cold Water" (feat. Justin Bieber & MØ, 2016) topped charts worldwide. Their fourth album "Music Is the Weapon" followed in 2020. Collaborations with Ariana Grande, Travis Scott, J Balvin, and Bruno Mars underline the project's reach far beyond the club floor. Billboard ranked Major Lazer at number five on their 2018 Dance 100.
