Niño de Elche
Elche, Spanienflamenco · experimental · electronic · jazz
Niño de Elche, born Francisco Contreras Molina in Elche in 1985 to a family with roots in Montejícar, Granada, began his career as a flamenco cantaor in competitions at a young age before expanding into rap, performance art, and social activism. Today he is considered one of the most radical renovators of contemporary flamenco—an artist who describes himself as "undisciplined" and "ex-flamenco." His work fuses traditional cante with jazz, Krautrock, electronica, and free improvisation, alongside poetry, dance, and performance art. With over fifteen albums to his name, including "Voces del extremo" (2015), "Antología del cante flamenco heterodoxo" (2018), and "Colombiana" (2019), he has built a singular catalogue. In 2019 he collaborated with indie band Los Planetas on the album "Fuerza nueva." His artistic partners include Rosalía, Israel Galván, Angélica Liddell, Raül Refree, and C. Tangana. Together with Pedro G. Romero and Israel Galván, he represented Spain at documenta 14. He won the Gaudí Award for Best Original Score in 2021. With his program "Entre Feldman," he brings his distinctive fusion of flamenco tradition and contemporary avant-garde to the stage.
