The Orquesta Sinfónica Illes Balears (OSIB) was founded in 1988 under the Fundació Pública de les Balears per a la Música in Palma de Mallorca and is one of Spain's most important symphony orchestras. Its current chief conductor is Pablo Mielgo; Luis Remartínez served as the first artistic director from the orchestra's founding until 1994. Home venues include the Palma Auditorium, the Trui Teatre and the Auditori de Manacor. The OSIB is strongly committed to promoting composers from the Balearic Islands and premiering their works. Since 1989 it has performed alongside internationally acclaimed soloists such as Alicia de Larrocha, Kiri Te Kanawa, Khatia Buniatishvili, Jean-Pierre Rampal and Joan Pons. Beyond the islands, the orchestra has appeared at the Auditorio Nacional and Teatro Real in Madrid, the Palau de la Música in Barcelona, the Musikverein in Vienna, Radio France in Paris, the UN Human Rights Hall in Geneva, and venues in Cannes, Perpignan, Marseille and Zurich. The OSIB is a member of the Asociación Española de Orquestas Sinfónicas.
