Paul Collins Beat – led by New York City-born musician and multi-instrumentalist Paul Collins (born 1956) – is one of the defining acts in American power pop. Collins co-founded The Nerves in the mid-1970s alongside Jack Lee and Peter Case, before forming The Beat in Los Angeles, who released their self-titled debut on Columbia/Sony in 1979. Legendary promoter Bill Graham took notice, leading to tours with The Police, The Jam, and Joe Jackson. The band – soon renamed Paul Collins' Beat – appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand and contributed a track to the Caddyshack soundtrack. After six studio albums, the group disbanded in 1989. Through the 1990s, Collins pursued solo work and a country-rock project (Paul Collins Band) on Caroline Records. Reviving Paul Collins' Beat from 2006 onwards with a new line-up, he released "Flying High" (2004), "Ribbon of Gold" (2007), and "King of Power Pop" (recorded in Detroit with producer Jim Diamond). A tireless DIY touring artist, Collins remains a central figure in the global power-pop scene.
