Paul van Dyk, born Matthias Paul on December 16, 1971, in Eisenhüttenstadt, East Germany, discovered electronic music through clandestine Western radio broadcasts while growing up in East Berlin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he returned to the East and launched his DJ career, including residencies at Berlin's legendary Tresor club from 1991. An early collaboration with Cosmic Baby under the name The Visions of Shiva preceded his 1994 debut album *45 RPM*, which featured the enduring anthem "For an Angel." In 1998, he left MFS Records to co-found his own Vandit Records label. His 2003 album *Reflections* earned him the first-ever Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album by a DJ. DJ Magazine voted him World No. 1 DJ in both 2005 and 2006, and he was also the first DJ to top Mixmag's rankings that same year. By 2008 he had sold over three million albums worldwide. His eighth studio album *From Then On* (2017, Vandit Records), recorded after a serious stage accident, was praised by Billboard as "a celebration of a beautiful life." He performs regularly at festivals such as Tomorrowland and Creamfields and runs his SHINE event series on Ibiza.
