Pep Vidal, born in 1980 in Rubí (Barcelona), is an artist and scientist whose dual background shapes every aspect of his practice. He completed a degree in Mathematics at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in 2008, followed by a PhD in Physics in 2014, during which he worked at the ALBA synchrotron developing mathematical algorithms for particle accelerator instruments. Alongside his academic career, he began studying contemporary art from 2011 onwards.
At the heart of his work are infinitesimal changes – minimal processes in nature and the environment that only become visible once they are already irreversible. He draws on concepts from physics, mathematics, and ecology, working with materials such as plants, air, mountains, and bubble wrap. Key works include "Schrödinger's Piano" – a dismantled antique piano with over a thousand components linked to quantum physics – as well as the series "Cézanne and Sainte Victoire" and "Limits of Control."
Vidal has held 13 solo exhibitions at venues including the Abrons Arts Center (New York), the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (Barcelona), LMNO Gallery (Brussels), and the Museu de l'Empordà (Figueres). Group shows have taken him to the Fundació Joan Miró (Barcelona), CAPC Bordeaux, CaixaForum, and the Fundació Antoni Tàpies. He teaches at UAB and is co-founder of granja.cat, a project promoting mathematical culture for children.
