Queen

London, United Kingdomrock · hard-rock · pop · progressive-rock
Queen are one of the most influential rock bands in music history, formed in London in 1970 by Freddie Mercury (vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar), Roger Taylor (drums), and John Deacon (bass). Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar in 1946 and raised in India and England, brought an unparalleled stage presence and a remarkable vocal range. The band released their self-titled debut in 1973 on EMI Records (UK) and Elektra (US), and quickly developed a style blending rock, pop, progressive rock, heavy metal, opera, and disco. Their cultural breakthrough came in 1975 with "Bohemian Rhapsody", which topped the UK charts for nine weeks and remains the best-selling commercial single in UK chart history. Queen released 15 studio albums in total, including landmarks such as *A Night at the Opera* (1975), *News of the World* (1977), and *The Game* (1980). Their live performances were legendary: in 1981 they broke world concert attendance records in São Paulo, and in 1986 they played to around 80,000 fans in Budapest. Mercury's final performance with Queen was on 9 August 1986 at Knebworth Park before an estimated 200,000 people. After his death from AIDS-related complications in 1991, a tribute concert was held at Wembley Stadium in 1992. Today, Queen continues to tour with vocalist Adam Lambert.
