"The Book of Mormon" is an American musical comedy with music, lyrics and book by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone – the creative team behind South Park and Avenue Q. The show follows two young LDS missionaries sent to a remote Ugandan village, where they encounter a community grappling with HIV/AIDS, famine and a local warlord rather than spiritual longing. The razor-sharp satire takes aim at organised religion, American idealism and the musical theatre genre itself. The show premiered on Broadway in 2011 and swept the Tony Awards, winning nine prizes including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original Score. Since then it has grossed over one billion dollars worldwide and continues to run both on Broadway and in London's West End. Its irreverent humour and catchy songs have made it one of the most talked-about and commercially successful musicals of the 21st century.
