West Side Trio

West Side Trio is a Dutch experimental string trio comprising Vera van der Bie (violin, FX, vocals), Rani Kumar (viola, FX, vocals) and Annie Tangberg (cello, FX, vocals). All three are classically trained with backgrounds in jazz and pop — combining effect pedals, amplifiers and electronics to forge a unique sound world ranging from delicate melodies to distorted electronic noise. The trio composes and improvises in real time, defying any single genre.
Their collaborative spirit has made West Side Trio sought-after partners: they toured Europe with Bill Laurance (Snarky Puppy), performed at Pinkpop and Tivoli/Vredenburg alongside Jonathan Jeremiah, and recorded with Ken Stringfellow (R.E.M., The Posies), Sonja van Hamel, Fay Lovsky and others. Their discography includes "Apocalyptic Sunrise" (2015), "360 in 2D" (2022) and "Alternate Realities" (2023).
WST is also active in film music: commissioned by EYE Filmmuseum and De Balie to compose and perform live scores for silent and animated films, including "Tabu" with the Metropole Strings at Muziekgebouw aan het IJ. Festival credits include the Cello Biënnale, Düsseldorf Jazz Rally, Love Supreme Festival and the Fringe Festival.
