Xaranga Myotragus is the first and, so far, only all-female xaranga band in Mallorca – a project born from the shared desire of its members to create such a group. The band consists of eleven musicians: Laura Guarda (alto saxophone), Montse Lozano (tenor saxophone), Lina Alomar (percussion), Paula García-Carpintero (trombone & flute), Blanca Figuerola (percussion), Aida Pericàs (alto saxophone), Cati Perelló (horn), Ana Abellán (trumpet & flugelhorn), Maria del Mar Ballester (trumpet), Marta Perales (clarinet) and Marina Bordoy (tenor saxophone). The musicians come from different villages across Mallorca and rehearse together once a week.
The name is a deliberate choice: the Myotragus – an extinct goat-antelope native to the Balearic Islands – is a symbol of the archipelago, but the story of its discoverer, Welsh palaeontologist Dorothea Bate, is equally significant. "She was also somewhat hidden, like the women who play xaranga or make music," explains band member Guarda. Xaranga Myotragus performs at festivals and events across Mallorca and can be booked via the Artistealo platform from €500.
