Santanyí first appeared in historical records in 1236 and was granted town status in 1300. The town was once surrounded by walls to protect it from pirates. The church of Sant Andreu dates from the 18th century and houses a Baroque organ. Traditional festivals run throughout the year; in March, locals celebrate the day of the chapel of Puig de Consolación. During the summer months, the Santanyí Festival Internationale de Música takes place.

Santanyí is 56 kilometres from Palma. Cala Santanyí lies around 60 kilometres from the island’s capital on Mallorca’s south-east coast. The Parc natural de Mondragó begins a few kilometres to the north. The Ses Salines nature reserve is 10 kilometres from Cala Santanyí.

A market takes place in Santanyí on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The bathing coves of Cala Llombards, Cala Mondragó and Cala s’Almunia lie around Cala Santanyí. In Cala Figuera, a large marina complements the fjord-like cove. Since 1992, the Parc natural de Mondragó has protected rare animal and plant species and provided a refuge for more than 70 bird species. Around 170 bird species live in and around the salt flats of Ses Salines, where Mallorcan salt has been produced for centuries.
