Bike Routes in Mallorca

Bike Routes in MallorcaCycling is one of the most popular pastimes in Mallorca, along with various water sports such as surfing, snorkelling and scuba diving. The island only has a limited number of officially designated cycle paths with marked signs, but the network of trails is constantly being expanded.

With its contrasting landscapes and varied topography, Mallorca offers first-class conditions for cycling trips. Regardless of whether you are hurtling down the road on a racing bike, climbing the mountains on a mountain bike or simply cycling along the beach, the island has something for everyone. The officially designated cycle paths are indicated and there are intermittent signs with information on the route, the elevation and the length of the bike tours.

Cycling in the Tramuntana mountains
In the Tramuntana mountains you will come across the most demanding bike paths in Mallorca that require tremendous stamina and discipline but are worth the effort. The number one ride is the mountain road to Sa Calobra. On the winding route, you will encounter altitudes of around 800 m and a 14 km long climb. Numerous hairpin bends make the bike path a real challenge. The ride to Cap Formentor, which marks the northernmost tip of the island is also popular. However, on this route you will have to share the narrow road with cars. Mountain bikers can look forward to a wide network of trails. Once the bike paths were pilgrim routes but today they have made way for by hardy mountain bikers. There is also a long-distance cycling route that is fully signposted that will take you through the most beautiful regions of the Serra de Tramuntana. The starting point is Paguera on the west coast of Mallorca and is 115km long by the time you reach your journey’s end at the harbour town of Port d'Soller.

Coastal cycle paths for a family trip
The flat south coast of Mallorca is perfect for relaxed family bike rides. A ten-kilometre cycle path leads along the beach promenade of Playa de Palma from Palma de Mallorca to Can Pastilla. On this tour, it is worth packing bathing costumes because the fine sandy beach on this stretch is perfect for a dip in the crystal-clear Mediterranean. It should be noted that the return journey is a tad more strenuous however. From Palma de Mallorca there is a good ride to Andratx on the west coast. The route is about 37 km long and includes a reasonably taxing ascent reaching an altitude of 200 metres in places. In coastal Llucmajor there is a bike arena with paved cycle paths. The signposted network of cycle paths has a total length of 40 km and may only be used by cars under certain conditions.

Official bike ride from Palma to Campos
The bike tour from Palma de Mallorca to Campos is officially marked with the number 6 by the Mallorcan Tourist Board. From the island’s capital, the route initially runs on a marked bike path along the promenade. You pass the airport, the seaside resort of Can Pastilla and the lively resort of S'Arenal. You leave the cycle path at the resort’s marina, leave the cycle path and turn left. After climbing a small incline, follow the road to Campos, which first leads you through the village of Bahia Grande. Although the gradient is not too bad, the bike tour does require a fair amount of stamina as you will clock up some 53 km in the saddle by the time you reach your destination in the interior of the island.
