Cuevas del Drach - the Dragon Caves of Porto Cristo

The Dragon Cave Cuevas del Drach near Porto Cristo on the southeast coast of Mallorca is the most famous karst cave on the island. The stalactite cave is home to the largest underground lake in Europe, which you can cross at the end of a sightseeing tour by boat.

Secret Subterranean world with spectacular stalactite formations

Cuevas del Drach Mallorca

The spectacular stalactite formations make the Cuevas del Drach one of the most famous sights on the southeast coast of Mallorca. Massive stalagmites and stalactites rise from the ground or hang down from the ceiling of the cave. Some formations have grown together over millions of years and form a closed pillar. The stalactite cave is accessible to visitors via a 1.2 km long corridor.

The path leads through several caves with sonorous names like "Theatre of the Fairies" and "Bad Dianas" (named after the Roman goddess of the hunt, the moon and nature). In the latter is a small subterranean lake with turquoise water, which reflects the bizarre dripstone formations from its surface. Elaborate lighting effects clearly reveal the shapes and contours of the stalagmites and stalactites, and sound effects help to create a mood of magical mystery. Inside the cave, the temperature is constantly a steady 21 degrees.

Live concert and boat trip in the Cuevas del Drach

The highlight of a tour of the Cuevas del Drach is a live underground concert. An auditorium was created, on the banks of Martel Lake especially for this purpose, which offers space for around 1,100 visitors. At the beginning of the performance the cave is darkened and the musicians glide past the spectators in illuminated boats.

A musical quartet plays famous classical pieces before the boats disappear again in the dark. After the concert, you have the opportunity to take a boat trip across the Martel Lake. The underground waters are 170 m long and measure 30 m at the widest point. Thousands of visitors pass through the Cuevas del Drach every hour of the season. Numerous buses bring tourists from all the resorts on the island to the attraction. The karst caves are open all year round but are significantly quieter in the off-season and in winter.
