The Cuevas del Hams are situated next to the Cuevas del Drach, the second network of subterranean caves in the municipality of Porto Cristo on the southeast coast of Mallorca. The caves are among the most famous sights on the island are a major tourist attraction on the south-east coast. Over millions and millions of years massive stalactites and stalagmites have formed in the caves. Some dripstone formations have grown together to form stone pillars.

Numerous structures have a tree-like structure, which is particularly appealing in the elaborate light installations in the caves. As in the Cuevas del Drach, this cave network also includes an underground lake with crystal clear water. A visit to the Cuevas del Hams is like a journey through millions of years of geological history. The dripstones grow very slowly and only increase in size by approximately an inch over a period of 30 years.

Guided tours of the cave labyrinth

The cave system offers two different tours. The standard tour lasts about 45 minutes and leads you over a 500-metre corridor past impressive dripstone formations. The stalactites obtained their distinctive copper-brown and rust-red colouring from the high proportion of copper and iron salts in the area. A second sightseeing tour takes longer and includes an underground concert.

The show called "Magical Mozart" is accompanied by atmospheric light effects. The musicians slip past the visitors in a rowing boat and play classical works from a repertoire of famous composers. In the summer months a large number of visitors to the caves appear from the late morning onwards so arrive early if you wish to avoid long waits. The cave system is located about two kilometers outside Porto Cristo on the road to Manacor.
