Sa Dragonera: natural paradise off the southwest coast

Just off the southwest coast of Mallorca lies the island of Sa Dragonera, an idyllic island completely' which is a protected nature reserve. Paguera and Sant Elm offer boat trips to the island. The name "Dragon Island" is thought to come from the unusual dragon-like appearance of the island as it rises fro, the sea. Sa Dragonera was once a pirate hideaway before a Spanish king had a small summer palace built on the headland in the 18th century.

In addition to the rare reptiles numerous species of birds are native to the island. There are no restaurants and bars and for this reason, you should bring ample refreshments if you take a day trip to Sa Dragonera. For divers, the underwater world around the the cliffs is full of natural diversity and is hugely popular. Colourful corals cling to the stony ground and with a little luck you will see moray eels, groupers and gilthead breams.
