Description
The Basilica of Saint Michael is a church in the heart of Palma, one of the oldest in the city, and equally visited as a place of worship and a cultural landmark.
Gothic Meets Baroque
The basilica brings together two architectural periods that could hardly seem more different at first glance: a Gothic exterior with a striking façade, and a baroque interior defined by richly decorated side chapels, baroque altars, and paintings and sculptures spanning several centuries. The organ is a particular highlight, regarded as a work of art in its own right. The statue of the Virgin Mary, reached via a small staircase on the right-hand side, is another of the interior's most memorable features. The interplay of light streaming through the stained-glass windows and falling across the floor completes the impression beautifully.
A Quiet Corner in the City Centre
What strikes visitors most is the palpable sense of stillness inside — a sharp contrast to the lively bustle of the surrounding lanes. The basilica sits on Carrer de Sant Miquel in the Centre neighbourhood, placing it right in the middle of Palma's Old Town pedestrian area. A step-free entrance ensures the church is accessible to all visitors.
History and Significance
The church is one of the oldest in Palma and is dedicated to the Archangel Michael, whose statue stands at the high altar as well as at several other points throughout the interior. The building occupies the site of a former mosque. The interior is further complemented by a more recent altar dedicated to Saint Pope John Paul II.
