Description
Es Jonquet is a historic neighbourhood in Palma's Ponent district, known for its old windmills and charming, winding lanes.
History & Character
The name Es Jonquet comes from the reeds that once grew abundantly here. The neighbourhood belongs to Santa Catalina and was home to fishermen, boat builders, rope makers and millers. The windmills processed grain and supplied bakeries both within the neighbourhood and across Palma. Today, Es Jonquet is one of the oldest settlements in the city — a cluster of small whitewashed houses built by sailors and fishing families.
Windmills & Murals
The windmills are the neighbourhood's unmistakable landmark. Their condition is rather neglected, and some are considered derelict. Alongside the mills, striking murals catch the eye throughout the lanes, adding a vivid layer of character to the area.
Views & Atmosphere
Es Jonquet offers lovely views over the harbour. The colourful fishermen's cottages and enchanting alleyways make for a wonderful wander through the neighbourhood — well away from the busiest tourist crowds.
Location & Surroundings
The neighbourhood sits at Carrer del Molí d'en Garleta 35 in the Ponent district, nestled between Santa Catalina, Son Armadans and the sea. The Mercat de Santa Catalina is close by.
