Description
The Ferrocarril de Sóller is a historic narrow-gauge railway with a connecting tram line in Sóller, linking Palma with the town and its harbour across the Tramuntana mountains.
Historic Railway & Tram
The wooden carriages of the Ferrocarril de Sóller date from the early 20th century and remain in service to this day — a working passenger railway that has become one of Mallorca's most beloved day trips. The lovingly maintained, nostalgic carriages give you the genuine feeling of travelling back in time. From Sóller's station, the journey continues by tram all the way to Port de Sóller, winding through the town and past pretty gardens down to the harbour.
The Route & Scenery
On the journey from Palma to Sóller, the train winds through the Tramuntana mountains, past sweeping mountain panoramas, ancient olive groves, and lemon and orange orchards. The ride is widely regarded as one of the most scenic on the island, with plenty of opportunities for photography through the open windows. The station in Sóller also houses an exhibition of works by Picasso and Miró, well worth a look.
Location & Getting There
Sóller station is located at Plaça d'Espanya 6 in the heart of Sóller. Paid parking is available on site. During busy periods — particularly in summer and at weekends — both parking spaces and trains fill up quickly, so arriving early is strongly recommended.
Practical Tips
Boarding the tram operates without a formal queuing system, which can feel rather chaotic when it's busy. On fully booked departures, it's quite possible you won't find a seat. There are separate areas for pre-booked and on-the-day tickets, so it's worth making sure you're in the right spot. Do keep an eye on your belongings around the station, as occasional pickpocketing has been reported in the area.
