Description
The Sant Salvador fortress walls are a historic landmark rising above the small town of Artà in the north-east of Mallorca.
Fortifications and Church Complex
The encircling walls surround the hilltop monastery church of Santuari de Sant Salvador and remain one of Artà's most defining features. The walls were built during the period of Islamic rule on Mallorca as a defensive fortification. The complex — with its well-preserved battlements and church — is visually striking, and inside the church you'll find a room housing sacred artefacts and vestments.
Walking the Walls
Several sections of the wall can be walked, rewarding you with sweeping panoramic views across Artà, the surrounding valley, and the region as far as the Parc de Llevant. Some passages are fairly narrow, so a little give-and-take is needed when passing other visitors. You can reach the complex on foot via the long flight of steps that climbs up from the town, or simply drive right up to the entrance by car.
Finding the Fortress
The site sits directly above Artà's old town (07570). A car park is available below the fortress, and those arriving by car can drive up close to the entrance.
On Site
Entry to the fortress walls is free of charge. A self-service café with shaded seating is on hand within the grounds, and a restaurant is also available on site.
