Description
The Tower of Aubarca (also known as Torre des Matzoc) is a historic watchtower dating from 1751, located within the municipal area of Artà in northeast Mallorca.
An 18th-Century Watchtower
Built from limestone masonry in 1751, the tower was originally constructed as a defensive structure. It still stands solidly today and can be climbed: a narrow stone staircase leads into the interior and up to the first floor, from where a wooden ladder takes you to the upper terrace. Inside it is very dark — a torch is strongly recommended for the ascent. At the top, an old cannon sits on the terrace alongside a sweeping panoramic view of the northeast coastline. On a clear day, you can see as far as Menorca and Cabo Formentor.
A Coastal Walk to Get There
The tower sits within the Llevant Peninsula Nature Park and can only be reached on foot. Common starting points include the car park above Cala Mitjanes and Cala Mesquida. The route is marked with concrete posts and winds along cliffs, coves and wild beaches through unspoilt coastal scenery. A head for heights is advisable on certain stretches, and some sections can become slippery in wet weather. The final climb into the tower itself requires a little scrambling.
Location
The tower stands in the municipal area of Artà (07579) in northeast Mallorca. It is not possible to drive directly to the tower; you will need to leave your vehicle at one of the nearby car parks and continue on foot.
Practical Tips
Sun protection and a hat are well worth bringing for the exposed coastal walk. A torch is essential for the climb inside the tower, as the steps are very narrow and have no handrail. Children should not attempt the ascent unaccompanied. The site is well kept — free from graffiti and litter.
