Description
Fonts Ufanes is a protected natural monument near Campanet, where water bursts up from the ground under the right conditions — one of the most fascinating natural phenomena on Mallorca.
The Phenomenon
After heavy, prolonged rainfall, underground reservoirs fill up and water is forced to the surface — sometimes just a handful of times a year, sometimes only once every few years. The site is officially protected as a natural monument. Even when the springs aren't active, a visit is well worth it: the holm oak woodland, the tranquillity, and the landscape along the route all speak for themselves.
Woodland, History and Wildlife
The path winds through dense holm oak forest and open meadows. Along the route you'll come across traces of history: charcoal-burning platforms, prehistoric remains from the Talayotic period, and old lime kilns. The native flora and fauna — frogs, mushrooms, sheep — paint the picture of a largely unspoilt natural landscape.
Paths and Accessibility
The walking trails are flat and well maintained; the main paths are wheelchair accessible. Toilets are available on site. Parking can be found near the church or in the village of Campanet itself.
When to Visit
The spring phenomenon is most likely to occur in autumn and winter following heavy rainfall. The local Mallorcan media regularly reports when the springs are flowing — if you're keen to witness the spectacle, it's worth keeping an eye on local news coverage.
