Description

Gorg Blau is a drinking-water reservoir in the Tramuntana mountains of Mallorca, nestled between Puig Major and Puig de Massanella.

A reservoir in the Tramuntana

The turquoise-blue water of this man-made lake creates a striking contrast against the grey rock faces of the surrounding mountain landscape. Together with the neighbouring Cúber reservoir, Gorg Blau supplies Palma de Mallorca with drinking water. Swimming is not permitted — the shoreline is fenced off, and access to the lake is limited to a handful of viewpoints.

Picnics, walking and wildlife

At the inlet of the reservoir you'll find a picnic area with tables and barbecue facilities, as well as a stony shoreline. Goats, sheep and other free-roaming animals are a regular sight in the area — it's worth staying alert when driving through the mountains, as the animals blend remarkably well into the terrain. Falling rocks are also a constant hazard in this part of the range.

Location & getting there

Gorg Blau sits right on the MA-10 in the Tramuntana mountains, on the route between Sóller and Lluc. A small car park is available on site. The drive through the mountains is a rewarding journey in itself — and you'll likely share the road with cyclists along the way.
