Description
The Murades de Palma are a historic fortification complex in the Centre district of Palma, with roots stretching back to 1575.
History & Layout
Construction began in 1575, with the complex extended over the following years and the sea wall taking shape during that period. At its heart stands the Baluard de Sant Pere, an impressive bastion tower that defines the character of the entire site. Since 2004, the complex has been home to a museum. Several bridges span the Sa Riera stream, and artificial waterfalls have been built into its bed. Trees and lush planting make this expansive green space a peaceful antidote to the bustle of the city centre.
Views & Atmosphere
From the old fortifications, your gaze sweeps out over the harbour, taking in ferries and cruise ships alike. The site is known as a well-kept, relatively tourist-free spot with a remarkably calm atmosphere. From the bridge area, there are additional views across the old port.
Location & Surroundings
The Murades de Palma sit at Carrer de Teodor Llorente 1 in the Centre district, between the city centre and the Santa Catalina neighbourhood. The complex is easily reached on foot and is close to a number of other sights within the area.
