Parc Natural de sa Dragonera
Description
The Parc Natural de Sa Dragonera is a nature reserve on the uninhabited island of the same name, lying just off the coast of Mallorca.
Unspoilt nature and the island of lizards
Sa Dragonera is a protected natural space, home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. One of its most charming features is the remarkably tame wall lizards that wander up to visitors out of sheer curiosity, often climbing onto hands, arms or feet — watching and gently interacting with them at the picnic areas is very much part of the experience. The island is also a haven for birdwatchers: Eleonora's falcons and black vultures are a regular sight. The clear waters surrounding the island are perfect for snorkelling and swimming.
Walking trails and viewpoints
Four waymarked walking routes of varying difficulty criss-cross the island, all with well-maintained, clearly signposted paths. Each route rewards you with sweeping panoramic views of the Mallorcan coastline, dramatic sea cliffs and the open sea. If you want to explore the island thoroughly, give yourself plenty of time — even the shortest route comfortably takes two hours. Some stretches offer little shade, so bring enough food and water, as there is nowhere on the island to buy provisions. Sections with significant changes in elevation may be challenging for anyone with a fear of heights.
Getting there by boat
Sa Dragonera is accessible by boat only. The closest departure point is the village of Sant Elm. Toilets are available on the island, and there is a small beach right by the jetty that is ideal for a swim.
Who will enjoy a visit
The natural park is a wonderful choice for families with children, nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts alike. The picnic areas and the island's peaceful, unspoilt character make it equally appealing for those who simply want to enjoy the tranquillity. If you are short on time, bear in mind that an hour is barely enough to scratch the surface of what the island has to offer.
