Description

The Parliament of the Balearic Islands is the seat of the autonomous legislature of the Balearic Islands, situated in the heart of Palma.

A Historic Building with a Long Past

The building traces its origins to the former home of the Círculo Mallorquín, the exclusive social club of Mallorcan high society. It was built in 1848 on a plot that had been freed up by the demolition of the Santo Domingo Convent, following the Mendizábal confiscations of 1835. In August 1983 it became the seat of the Balearic Parliament, and in 1990 it was granted the status of a Bien de Interés Cultural — Spain's highest category of heritage protection. The distinctive, richly decorated façade, complete with turrets, gives the building the air of a grand palace.
