Description
The Parliament of the Balearic Islands is the seat of the autonomous legislature of the Balearic Islands, situated in the heart of Palma.
A Historic Building with a Long Past
The building traces its origins to the former home of the Círculo Mallorquín, the exclusive social club of Mallorcan high society. It was built in 1848 on a plot that had been freed up by the demolition of the Santo Domingo Convent, following the Mendizábal confiscations of 1835. In August 1983 it became the seat of the Balearic Parliament, and in 1990 it was granted the status of a Bien de Interés Cultural — Spain's highest category of heritage protection. The distinctive, richly decorated façade, complete with turrets, gives the building the air of a grand palace.
Interior & Library
Those granted access discover a beautifully maintained interior featuring restored state rooms and a historic staircase that is itself a listed feature. The parliamentary library holds more than 16,000 volumes of historical works and is one of the most remarkable elements of the building. Guided tours bring the rooms and their stories to life, one step at a time.
Visits & Access
The building is not generally open to the public, but guided tours do take place on special occasions — including the annual open day, as well as events such as Open House Mallorca and the Nit de l'Art, where audio guides are also available.
Location & Surroundings
The Parliament is located at Carrer del Conquistador 11 in Palma's Centre district, just a short walk from the Jardí de la Seu and the city's art museum.
