Puig de Galatzó
Description
Puig de Galatzó is a mountain in the municipality of Puigpunyent and one of the most demanding summit hikes in the Serra de Tramuntana.
A challenging summit with panoramic views
The hike up Puig de Galatzó is no gentle stroll: sure-footedness and stamina are essential throughout, the terrain is rocky, and the final stretch to the summit requires some light scrambling. Those who make it to the top are rewarded with a full 360-degree panorama — on a clear day you can see across the Bay of Palma and Mallorca's south-west coastline, and on exceptionally clear days Menorca, Ibiza and Cabrera are said to be visible too. The summit plateau itself is surprisingly flat and feels almost like a small highland shelf.
Route-finding and navigation
Waymarking on the way to the summit is patchy — depending on the weather and route taken, navigation can become tricky. In mist, markings are virtually non-existent, so good visibility is strongly advisable for this hike. Font des Pi (Fuente des Pi) is a widely used starting point, and from there the route can also be walked as a circular. The access road to the car park at Font des Pi is in poor condition and should be driven with care.
Varied and rewarding scenery
The ascent passes through a changing landscape: sections of holm-oak woodland, rocky passages and open mountain terrain alternate throughout the climb. Wildflowers and endemic plants line the route. The descent along the ridge towards Reserva Park is long and demands sustained concentration.
Location and getting there
The walking area lies within the municipality of Puigpunyent (07194) in the Balearic Islands. One entry point to the route is on the MA-10 at kilometre marker 97. Parking lower down is advisable, as the roads at higher elevations are damaged.
