Puig de Maria
Description
Puig de Maria is a hiking summit crowned by a medieval monastery, rising directly above the northern Mallorca town of Pollença.
The Ascent
The path begins at the foot of the hill on the edge of Pollença. The longer lower section follows a made-up surface of asphalt and concrete mix; only in the upper third does the ground give way to natural stone, which becomes increasingly uneven and slippery underfoot. Sturdy footwear with a good grip is strongly recommended. Rest benches are dotted along the route, and much of the climb passes through tree cover, keeping things pleasantly shaded.
At the Top: Monastery, Views and Atmosphere
The summit is home to an ancient monastery and sanctuary with a distinctly medieval character, its stone buildings housing a small collection of historical exhibits. The panoramic views from the top take in Pollença, Port de Pollença, the Bay of Alcúdia, the coastline and the Tramuntana mountains. Goats roam freely around the monastery, and the occasional cat makes an appearance too. Picnic areas, seating, tables and barbecue spots are all available, and the atmosphere up here is wonderfully peaceful and secluded.
Location & Getting There
Puig de Maria sits directly on the Camí d'es Puig in Pollença (07460). The walk starts from the main road at the base of the hill. There is a small car park at the bottom; parking is permitted only there, as the upper road is reserved for residents.
