Description

Refugio de Cúber is a publicly owned mountain shelter in Escorca, set beside the Cúber reservoir in the heart of the Tramuntana range.

A Shelter with History

The building was erected in 1978 by ICONA as accommodation for fishermen, and converted into a refugio during the 1990s. It remains in public ownership and is managed through the Balearic Islands' network of protected natural spaces. Advance booking is absolutely essential — access to the building is not possible without a confirmed reservation, and anyone arriving without one will not be admitted.

Facilities & Character

The refugio is a simple, self-catering shelter with no warden on site. There is a fireplace and a barbecue grill, along with a chemical toilet located outside the building. There are no plug sockets. The outdoor area has shaded tables and benches that can be used as a rest stop without a booking.

Beside the Reservoir

The shelter sits right on the edge of the Cúber reservoir in the municipality of Escorca. Parking is limited, so arriving early is a good idea. From the car park the shelter is reached on foot. The long-distance GR221 footpath passes directly by the refugio, making it a useful landmark for walkers passing through.

Surroundings & Nature

The shelter is set within a vast, peaceful mountain landscape. Sheep, donkeys and other animals roam freely in the area. The views across the reservoir and the surrounding peaks are one of the defining features of this spot. The terrain is well suited to walking and is a great choice for families with children as well.
