Description
The Royal Palace of La Almudaina is a historic royal castle in the heart of Palma — once an Arab fortress, now the official royal palace on Mallorca.
Gothic Meets Islamic Heritage
The Almudaina stands on the foundations of a Moorish citadel seized during the Christian conquest of 1229. The building that exists today blends Gothic and Moorish-Islamic architecture into a truly distinctive ensemble: heavy oak-beamed ceilings, stone halls, vaulted chambers and courtyards adorned with fountains and palm trees. Particularly noteworthy are the precious tapestries and wall hangings, as well as the Gothic Chapel of Saint Anne. The venerable inner courtyard is considered one of the most photogenic spots in the entire complex.
Views and Location in the Centre Quarter
The palace sits in the Centre quarter of Palma, on Carrer del Palau Reial, directly opposite the cathedral. From the terraces and upper levels of the building, you're treated to sweeping views over the harbour and the Bay of Palma. The inner courtyard also offers a wonderful vantage point from which the cathedral makes for a spectacular picture.
Visiting and Getting Your Bearings
An audio guide is available separately and is widely regarded as a worthwhile addition, lending real depth to the historical context of each room. The palace continues to be used by the Spanish royal family for official occasions, which means certain areas may occasionally be closed to the public. Families are very much welcome, and card payments — including contactless — are accepted on site.
