Description

Sa Calobra is a cove and natural landmark within the municipality of Escorca in Mallorca, nestled among the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana and renowned for its dramatic scenery of towering cliffs, a spectacular gorge, and crystal-clear turquoise water.

Cove, Gorge and Shingle Beach

At the heart of Sa Calobra lies a small cove flanked by enormous cliffs, where the Torrent de Pareis — a mountain stream carving its way through a deep gorge — meets the Mediterranean. The beach itself is shingle, the water a vivid turquoise and exceptionally clear. Snorkellers will find a rich underwater world here, with an abundance of fish close to the shore. On calm days the cove is equally well suited to swimming and simply drifting in the water. The Torrent de Pareis gorge was declared a natural monument in 2003, and visitors are required to observe strict conservation rules. During the summer months the riverbed dries out completely and becomes a walkable hiking route.

Getting There: Hairpin Bends Through the Tramuntana

The road to Sa Calobra winds through the mountains via tight hairpin bends and breathtaking views over the Tramuntana coastline — for many visitors, the drive itself is part of the experience. The route is demanding: anyone unfamiliar with narrow mountain roads or heights is well advised to take a scheduled bus instead. In summer the road is shared with a large number of coaches and a considerable flow of cyclists, which can make the journey particularly time-consuming during peak season.

The Tunnel Path Down to the Beach

From the car park, a footpath leads down to the cove through two illuminated tunnels hewn directly into the rock face. This unusual passageway makes for a memorable start to any beach visit and is consistently described by visitors as one of the highlights of the trip.
