Description
Sa Lleona is a stone lion monument carved directly from the rock in s'Horta, in the south-east of Mallorca — a quiet, nature-enveloped attraction with a fascinating historical backstory.
The Monument
At the heart of Sa Lleona is a lion's head, hand-chiselled into a single boulder. The sculpture impresses with the precision of its craftsmanship and sits tucked in the shade of the surrounding woodland. The monument dates from the 1930s, when a military battery was established in this area — now known as the Puig de sa Lleona. The sculpture marks the entrance to what was once a military site. Any tunnels on the grounds are closed and cannot be visited.
Walking Trail & Surroundings
From the Puig de sa Lleona, there are lovely views stretching out towards the coastline. A walking trail continues from the monument up to the summit. The area has a calm, off-the-beaten-track feel — a fine spot to pause and take in the natural surroundings.
Getting There
Sa Lleona is located on the Camí de sa Lleona, postcode 07669, in s'Horta (Felanitx) in the south-east of Mallorca. The monument is easily reachable by car or bicycle. A handy tip if you're approaching from the east: GPS coordinates can be slightly off — it's worth stopping around 100 metres before your indicated destination and looking to the left.
