Gabriel Prokofiev, born on 6 January 1975 in London, is a Russian-British composer, producer, and DJ – and the grandson of legendary composer Sergei Prokofiev. After completing his musical studies at the Universities of Birmingham and York, he deliberately turned away from the insular world of contemporary classical music and built a parallel career as a dance, grime, electro, and hip-hop producer. This fusion of classical training and electronic club culture defines his distinctive style, where orchestral works meet contemporary electronics and new music intersects with the dancefloor.
In 2004 he founded the independent label and club-night format Nonclassical, bringing classical concerts to London pubs, rock venues, and warehouses, with DJs performing between acts. His compositions have been performed by the BBC Philharmonic, St Petersburg Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony, Detroit Symphony, MDR Leipzig, and the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has received two Ivor Novello Award nominations for his compositional work. As a DJ and performer, he regularly appears in East London clubs and at electronic music festivals.
