Santanyí first appears in historical records in 1236 and was granted town rights in 1300. A town wall once protected it from pirates. Today, traditional festivities shape the annual calendar. The 18th-century church of Sant Andreu preserves a Baroque organ.

Santanyí is 56 kilometres from Palma and serves as the municipality's administrative centre. Along the southeast coast, you will find bathing destinations such as Cala Santanyí, Cala Llombards, Cala Mondragó, Cala s’Almunia and Cala Figuera. Cala Figuera also has a large marina.

The market takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays. March brings the Day of the Chapel of Puig de Consolación, summer the Santanyí Festival Internationale de Música, and autumn the fair with folklore groups and local crafts. Covering almost 800 hectares, the Parc natural de Mondragó has protected rare animals and plants since 1992 and provides a refuge for more than 70 bird species. Around 170 bird species live around the salt pans of Ses Salines.

Santanyí is a good choice if you would like to combine market visits, traditional festivities and the town's history with trips to the southeast coast. Bathing coves such as Cala Llombards add to your stay. The Parc natural de Mondragó is ideal for hiking, while Ses Salines offers insights into salt production, which has been practised there for centuries.
