In the historic centre, you will find old buildings, narrow lanes, churches and shaded squares. UNESCO added the historic centre to its World Heritage List in 2011. Pine forests and the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana surround Sóller. In Port de Sóller, watchtowers recall the former defence of the Mallorcan coast against pirates.
Sóller is located in north-west Mallorca, between the coast and the Tramuntana mountains. Palma is 30 kilometres away and takes around 40 minutes by car. Palma airport is about half an hour away by car. From Port de Sóller, it takes around 15 minutes to reach Fornalutx, which lies among orange and lemon groves, forests and mountain slopes.
The station building dates from 1912. The Tren de Sóller was built at the beginning of the 20th century to transport citrus fruit from the Golden Valley to Palma. Today, the historic tram complements the connection between Sóller and Port de Sóller. The ethnological museum occupies the Casal de Cultura, dating from 1740, and displays furniture, instruments, clothing and paintings from earlier times. There is also a natural history museum and a botanical garden. On 29 June, Port de Sóller celebrates the festival in honour of the patron saint of fishermen, alongside other cultural events.
Families will find a beach at Platja des Través that slopes gently into the sea. Walkers can follow old trekking trails through the Serra de Tramuntana and paths through citrus and olive groves. Those interested in history and culture can explore the historic centre, the watchtowers and the museums. If you enjoy historic rail routes, you can combine trips to Palma and Port de Sóller with views of the mountains, groves and coast.
