The terrace almost floats above the water. In front of you lies the open sea of Cala Ratjada, the setting sun draws a golden streak across the bay, and in your glass a signature cocktail slowly turns. That is how an evening at The Sea Club begins — and anyone who has sat here once understands immediately why the Cumberlege family has refused to let go for over half a century.

Concept
This place defies easy categorisation, which is its greatest appeal. Officially a small boutique hotel with 17 individually designed rooms right on the seafront of Cala Ratjada, it feels in daily life more like a well-kept private villa where you happen to get excellent cocktails and a creamy Arroz meloso. The house's own answer to this identity question is concise: 'When is a hotel not a hotel? When it's The Sea Club.'
Behind that line lies real substance. The British Cumberlege family came to this colonial villa by the water in the 1960s, bought it, and never looked back. Today the third generation runs the house — Luis and Jenny are the faces guests come to know, surrounded by a team that has been there for years. That continuity is tangible: the old bougainvilleas and oleander bushes in the garden, the pool in the hacienda courtyard, the individual casitas with their own terraces — all of it has grown character, not the glossy finish of a newly built resort.
The restaurant and cocktail bar are open to day visitors too. You do not need to stay overnight to sit on the terrace and spend hours gazing at the sea.

Atmosphere
Snow-white hacienda cottages against deep-blue Mediterranean water. Flowering oleanders and palms casting shade on the paths. Rocks from which you can jump straight into the sea — barely twenty metres from the seaside terrace. This is not staging; it is the actual landscape.
The atmosphere guests describe again and again sounds like a house party hosted by someone you immediately like: informal, warm, charmingly eccentric. No dress-code theatre, no reservation pomp. The interiors mix traditional Mallorcan with Old-English patina and contemporary touches — an eclecticism that reads not as a deliberate style choice but as the result of decades of lived history.
As dusk falls across the bay, the bar terrace becomes the focal point. Local wines, signature cocktails, the sound of the sea directly beneath.
Food & Drinks
The kitchen works with Mediterranean-Spanish foundations and international touches: fresh fish, seasonal ingredients, dishes made for sharing. The Arroz meloso — a creamy, almost risotto-like rice — stands out as a house signature. Stracciatella, tuna and anchovies appear regularly in guest praise; patatas bravas are a staple. Breakfast is included for hotel guests, light lunches bridge the afternoon, and in the evenings the restaurant comes fully into its own.
The cocktail bar offers a solid range of local wines and house creations. If you want to watch the sunset with a drink in hand, the sea terrace is exactly the right place.
Programme & Music
In summer, DJ sets and live music regularly animate the bar terrace — typically on Saturday evenings, and more frequently during peak weeks. The range runs from relaxed sunset sets to more energetic club sound. At the end of the season, the house throws its annual closing party: a welcome drink for everyone, snacks, and the Glassford Reggae Band sending the summer off in style.
For Whom & What Occasions
The house appeals primarily to adults who value character and calm over mass tourism. Romantic dinners with sea views, sunset drinks after a long day at coves like Son Moll or Cala Agulla, a relaxed lunch away from resort crowds — all of it fits here. An international crowd from the UK, Germany, Scandinavia and beyond particularly appreciates the combination of a genuinely waterfront position and personal, warm-hearted service.
Insider Tip
Not every room looks out to sea — only roughly half have a true sea view, the rest overlook the garden. When booking a stay, it is worth asking specifically for a sea-view room. And the most important tip of all: the restaurant and bar are accessible without booking a room. Simply head to the terrace on an evening when the light over the bay turns warm and golden — and act as though you have always belonged.
