Bodega Terra IóN

Bodega Terra IóN sits on the narrow, winding country road that links Andratx with Es Capdellà — on a stretch of the south-west you would hardly expect to find there. Instead of villas with sea views there is woodland, old terraces and a basin in which the Serra de Tramuntana is already clearly present. On a bend of this road, Bodega Santa Catarina produced wine from the nineteen-eighties onwards; today the estate works under the name Terra IóN, which it has carried since 2022.

It was founded by Domenic Amat Kreft and Jan-Hendrik Goldbeck. Amat Kreft is grower, managing director and cellar master in one: he grew up in a winemaking family in Rheinhessen, trained at German VDP estates and in California, and studied viticulture and oenology at Geisenheim. Annika Bolduan runs hospitality, tastings and the wine club.

The estate understands itself explicitly as a working vineyard, not a backdrop. Of the finca's twenty-five hectares, seven carry vines, mostly Mallorcan varieties; two further hectares of French varieties came through agreements with neighbouring fincas such as Son Bosc.

Vineyard and soils

The work is certified organic — the seal comes from the Balearic CBPAE — and follows biodynamic, regenerative principles: cover crops between the rows, rebuilding the soils, deliberately lower yields, a great deal of handwork. Vineyard, soil, forest, water and the surrounding terraces are treated as one connected system rather than as a crop with margins around it.

The soils are calcareous: layers formed over millions of years, poor in nutrients but rich in structure, forcing the vines to root slowly and deeply. Together with altitude, wind and Mediterranean light, this produces the freshness and tension everything here is aimed at.

The wines of Bodega Terra IóN

The Classic Line holds three wines. The white InspiracIóN comes from Viognier, Prensal Blanc, Giró Ros and Moscatell and shows stone fruit, citrus and a mineral finish. The rosé AdiccIóN, from Manto Negro and Callet, is fresh and saline, with wild strawberry and rose petal. The red RebelIóN, from Callet, Manto Negro and Syrah, brings red fruit, gentle spice and a hint of Mediterranean garrigue.

Above them stands the premium line DedicacIóN, made in small quantities and aged in wood: a white from Viognier raised in German oak, and a red from Syrah, Callet and Manto Negro that spends a year and a half in French oak. The wines carry the Vi de la Terra Mallorca designation and the Distintiu Serra de Tramuntana Patrimoni Mundial awarded by the Consorci Serra de Tramuntana.

Visiting, tastings and the Wine Truck

There are two ways onto the estate. The guided formats need a reservation: the Classic Experience tastes the three classics on the terrace above the vines, optionally with a tapas board of cheese, cured meat, olives and bread; an extended version adds the cellar. The Tasting Experience leads through vineyard and cellar and pairs the wines with local, seasonal food — Mallorcan cheeses and cured meats, sobrassada, vegetables or fruit in season. The Winemaker Experience is the private round with the cellar master, with a premium wine alongside the three classics. Tastings are held in German, English and Spanish.

Without a reservation you head for the Wine Truck at the entrance: wine by the glass, bottles to take home, no access to the tasting terrace. Right beside it the EXPLORACIóN route begins, a self-guided walk through the vineyard, under old and young olive trees and past the vegetable garden. Whatever is ripe there — courgettes, lettuce, tomatoes, herbs — can be bought at the Wine Truck, harvested the same day; so can the wines. Parking at the estate is free, and children are welcome, with non-alcoholic alternatives for them.

Frequently asked questions about Bodega Terra IóN

Who is behind Bodega Terra IóN?

The estate was founded by Domenic Amat Kreft and Jan-Hendrik Goldbeck. Amat Kreft runs the vineyard, the cellar and daily operations; he comes from a winemaking family in Rheinhessen, has worked at German VDP estates and in California, and studied viticulture and oenology at Geisenheim. Annika Bolduan is responsible for hospitality, tastings and events. Before Terra IóN, Bodega Santa Catarina produced wine on the same site.

Which grape varieties does Terra IóN grow?

The focus is on Mallorcan varieties: Manto Negro, Callet, Prensal Blanc, Giró Ros and Moscatell. Viognier and Syrah come on top, planted on additional land at neighbouring fincas. The premium white is a single-variety Viognier, the premium red a blend of Syrah, Callet and Manto Negro.

Can you visit Terra IóN and taste there?

Yes. Guided formats run from the Classic Experience on the tasting terrace through a round of vineyard and cellar with food pairings to a private tasting with the cellar master. There is also a picnic among the vines. Tastings are held in German, English and Spanish, and the wines can be bought on site.

Do you need to book a tasting in advance?

Booking ahead is recommended for the guided experiences; walk-in guests are taken as far as space allows. Without a reservation you can go to the Wine Truck at the entrance, which serves wine by the glass and sells bottles to take home, but gives no access to the tasting terrace. Private tastings and groups can be arranged on request.

What designation and certifications does Terra IóN hold?

The wines are released under the Vi de la Terra Mallorca designation. The viticulture is certified organic, with the seal issued by the Balearic CBPAE; the estate is also a member of the Mallorcan organic association APAEMA. On top of that comes the Distintiu Serra de Tramuntana Patrimoni Mundial, awarded by the Consorci Serra de Tramuntana for produce from the World Heritage area.

What are the Wine Truck and the EXPLORACIóN route?

The Wine Truck stands at the entrance to the estate and needs no reservation. The EXPLORACIóN route starts right beside it, a self-guided walk through the vineyard, under old and young olive trees and past the vegetable garden. Whatever is ripe there — courgettes, lettuce, tomatoes, herbs — can be bought at the Wine Truck, harvested the same day.
