On the outskirts of Petra, right in the heart of Mallorca, a family has been carrying on its own small winemaking tradition since the year 2000. What began as a plot of roughly 2,000 square metres, planted to keep alive the old Mallorcan custom of making wine for one's own household, has grown into 2.5 hectares of vines, all of whose fruit goes exclusively into the estate's own bottles. Bodega Can Coleto Vins Ecològics farms its vineyards under organic principles and belongs to the Denominació d'Origen Pla i Llevant, the appellation on the island's eastern side known for both robust, sun-soaked reds and fresh, mineral whites.

The estate's story is closely tied to the upheavals of Mallorcan agriculture. When subsidies for grubbing up old vineyards arrived following EU accession in the 1970s, much of the island's traditional vine acreage disappeared. The family behind Can Coleto chose the opposite path: as grapes available for purchase grew scarce, they began planting again themselves. They chose Monastrell, a variety that performs reliably well on Mallorca and lends itself to young, easy-drinking wines that don't demand long ageing.

That philosophy has produced several wines that have since built the house a name of its own. The Blanc de Negres is singled out again and again in tastings and reviews, closely followed by the Sumum, also warmly recommended for tasting. Further labels such as Negre S and Rosat Sara round out the range, showing that despite its modest size the estate works deliberately across styles without losing its family character.

Visitors to the bodega get a direct look into organic viticulture and the chance to taste the wines right where they are made. Tours are led by family members themselves, something numerous accounts describe as unusually personal and attentive. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, suited equally to couples and small groups keen to learn more about Mallorcan winemaking than any label alone could tell them.

Those arriving by car will find an accessible parking space and step-free access to the grounds, and card payment is accepted. It's worth noting that dogs are kept on the property — several visitors independently mention their presence, so a degree of caution on arrival is advisable.

Can Coleto stands as a fitting example of the small, independent estates of the Pla i Llevant that answered the wholesale vineyard clearances of the 1970s with a deliberately organic path of their own, one they continue to follow with conviction today.
