House of Son Amar – Nightlife in Mallorca

House of Son Amar

Bunyola

Bunyolashow venue

The courtyard smells of warm evening air and old stone. A thousand small lights hang above the olive trees, music begins — and suddenly fountains shoot upward, lasers painting patterns across the Mallorcan night. For anyone visiting for the first time, this is the moment you understand why this finca at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana was once called "the Las Vegas of the Balearics." The comparison flatters Las Vegas, if anything — a 16th-century manor house has a soul no boulevard casino ever will.

Concept

What started as simple countryside evenings on a rural estate grew over decades into one of the most ambitious entertainment venues in the entire Balearics. The Whittaker family, who acquired and steadily expanded the property, built world-class showtainment here: cabaret, flamenco, live orchestra, magic, acrobatics, and ultimately an ensemble of former Cirque du Soleil artists performing night after night to audiences of up to a thousand.

After the passing of the founder and a period of reinvention, Dominic Miles and Paul Abrey now lead the house — primarily as an exclusive event venue. Weddings in historic stonework, gala evenings, and corporate events for clients including Sony, BMW, and Universal define its current rhythm. Public evening shows run seasonally; anyone wanting to experience a live performance should check the current programme in advance.

The Show — What This Stage Makes Possible

The final major productions set the benchmark. "Ohalá" told a family-friendly story of a father reading bedtime tales to his daughter — a hero chasing his princess across the Mediterranean, through storms and into an underwater scene with flying mermaids, all carried by acrobatics, light, film, and an original score. "Exhibit" — for adults — turned the dial: aerial acrobatics, contemporary dance, an electronic soundtrack, 3D projections, and futuristic stage design with performers drawn directly from Cirque du Soleil.

The setting is the Gran Teatro: an auditorium with a movable stage, fountains, lasers, and — by the venue's own account — one of the largest LED walls ever installed in a European show space. The technology is real; the effect on the audience even more so. Ticket categories historically ranged from side seats with a surprisingly good frontal view to VIP sofa booths in prime position and integrated stage seats just metres from the action.

Atmosphere — Seven Rooms, One Finca

Seven independent spaces can be used separately or combined, each with its own character. The "Sa Tafona" — a restored stone olive press inside the main building — is today a wine cellar and wedding hall: around 300 square metres, 150 seated or over 250 standing, with old-school vaulted stonework. The theatre interior has been fully redesigned: enlarged stage, large screens on both sides, modern lighting rig.

Before the theatre doors open, the real overture plays out in the courtyard: lit olive trees, cocktails under the open sky, live music in the foyer — and then the synchronised fountain-and-laser show. A moment even seasoned travellers cannot simply brush aside.

Edén

Those who haven't had enough follow an illuminated leaf-canopy tunnel to the garden club "Edén": a long bar, a DJ stage above a water basin, terrace sofas, high tables. The crowd dresses accordingly — and knows why.

For Whom & What Occasions

Wedding couples with the Tramuntana mountains as a backdrop. Companies looking for a setting with genuine theatrical infrastructure. Pairs or groups after an unforgettable evening when a public show is running. The House of Son Amar fills a niche that nobody else on the island occupies.

Insider Tip

Arriving early pays off: the olive tree courtyard with its fairy lights is not a warm-up act but an experience in itself — and the fountain show begins before the theatre doors open. The address at km 10.8 on the Palma–Sóller road is largely unknown terrain for Palma taxis; if you're not driving, booking the venue's own transfer service in advance is the smarter move.
