Cala Antena Beach, Mallorca

Cala Antena is a narrow sandy cove on the northern edge of Cales de Mallorca, framed by rocky cliffs and garrigue. Its character comes from strong contrasts: below are fine, pale sand and a narrow inlet, while hotels and holiday accommodation stand above on the right-hand side. By contrast, the left flank remains lower, greener and undeveloped. As a result, the cove feels neither secluded nor like an ordinary hotel beach—it sits precisely between a holiday resort and a rocky coastal landscape.

The beach lies at the end of an inlet around 170 metres long, whose cliffs tightly channel sound and waves. This gives Cala Antena plenty of atmosphere, but also brings practical limitations: the sandy area is compact, access is down steps, there is little natural shade at midday, and easterly winds can make the water rough. At the same time, you will find toilets, showers, a beach bar and seasonal services directly at or near the cove. Cala Antena is therefore particularly suitable if you are looking for a small bathing cove with facilities and are not bothered by either the steps or the buildings above the cliffs.

Where is Cala Antena beach, Mallorca, and what is the cove like?

Cala Antena lies within the municipality of Manacor and forms the northern edge of the Cales de Mallorca development. The Balearic Islands beach directory gives the distance to Portocolom as 10.5 kilometres. From here, a series of unspoilt coves begins along the coast of the municipality of Manacor toward the east.

The cala is the end of an inlet extending around 170 metres inland. Rocky cliffs covered in garrigue frame the water. When you look out to sea from the beach, a steep cliff rises on the right, with tourist accommodation along its upper edge. On the left, the terrain remains lower and undeveloped. This contrasting layout is precisely what shapes the impression: one side is clearly defined by the holiday resort, while the other is rocky and comparatively natural.

Cala Antena is not a secluded cove. Hotels and residential complexes are located in its immediate surroundings, so there is a steady flow of visitors. Below the development, however, the beach remains small-scale and clearly enclosed by the rocks. The soundscape and atmosphere can vary considerably depending on how busy the sandy area is, whether the beach bar is operating and the state of the sea.

For guidance on dimensions, the Cales de Mallorca website describes the sandy area as approximately 85 metres long and 25 metres wide. MallorCard and Miet-Finca-Mallorca, by contrast, list a length of 35 metres and a width of 90 metres. Length and width are probably measured along different orientations, or different sections of the sandy area are included; for your visit, the most important point is that this is a compact cove.

How do you get to Cala Antena beach?

You can reach Cala Antena by car via the signposted roads of Cales de Mallorca or by bus to within approximately 100 metres of the beach. The road into the development is paved and signposted. Within the resort, follow the signs to Cala Antena and then look for parking in the surrounding streets.

The final section down to the sand follows paths and a relatively steep staircase from the cliff edge to sea level. From above, the view opens across the narrow inlet; on the way back, you must climb the same height again. With a heavy beach bag, a pushchair or limited mobility, this access is considerably less convenient than a level route onto a beach.

Handrails make the descent easier. Nevertheless, Miet-Finca-Mallorca lists the beach as not wheelchair-accessible. The available aids should therefore not be confused with step-free access.

Warning: Save enough energy for the return climb up the steps and wear secure sandals or shoes on the stairs. Especially with plenty of luggage, the ascent in the heat is more strenuous than the short distance might suggest.

Where can you park at Cala Antena?

You can park in the streets of the Cales de Mallorca development; during the high season, the nearest spaces are often occupied early. The Balearic Islands beach directory specifically describes parking in the streets of the holiday resort. MallorCard also mentions smaller parking options near the access point.

Son Pages refers to around ten spaces at the lower end of a winding road and recommends attempting to drive down there only in the low season. Porta Holiday, by contrast, mentions a car park directly behind the beach without specifying its size or general accessibility. You should therefore not rely on finding a free parking space immediately beside the water.

The simplest option is to leave your car above the cove within the street network of Cales de Mallorca and bring only light luggage. Finding a parking space is usually easier in the morning; in summer, the nearby streets may fill up later. The situation can also ease in the late afternoon when the first beachgoers begin to leave.

Note: A free parking area by the lower access point is not guaranteed. Be prepared to park above the cliffs and walk down the steps to the beach.

What are the sand, water and swimming conditions like?

Cala Antena has fine, pale sand and a predominantly sandy entrance into the water in the central part of the beach. The sand extends inland into the mouth of a torrent. Along the sides of the cove, however, there are rocks, rocky shelves and patches of seagrass beneath the water.

Descriptions of the gradient vary slightly. Cales de Mallorca describes fine white sand and calm, clear water, while Porta Holiday refers to shallow water. MallorCard initially describes a shallow area by the shore, followed by a more noticeable increase in depth. The Balearic Islands beach directory gives a water depth of approximately 1.7 metres at a distance of 50 metres from the coast and around four metres at a distance of 150 metres from the shore. For children and less confident swimmers, the sandy area directly beside the shore is therefore the most sensible zone.

The cove opens toward the east. With easterly winds, waves can enter the narrow inlet and make the water rougher. You should therefore watch the swimming flags and follow instructions from the seasonal lifeguard service. Calm, clear water is suitable for swimming, while people also snorkel along the rocky edges. Water shoes are useful there because the seabed is not entirely sandy.

Boats can anchor on the sandy seabed of the natural mouth, which is around 80 metres wide. If watercraft are anchored in the cove, keep a sufficient distance while swimming and watch their movements.

Warning: Easterly winds hit the mouth of the cala directly. Even if the water initially appears calm by the shore, waves and currents can change over the course of the day.

Is Cala Antena suitable for families with children?

Cala Antena is suitable for families if the children can use steps safely and are supervised in the water. The fine sand and sandy entrance in the centre are pleasant for playing and swimming. Toilets, showers, a beach bar and a seasonal lifeguard service make spending several hours here more practical than at a completely undeveloped cove.

However, the beach has two disadvantages for very young children: access is down a steep staircase, and the water becomes deeper more quickly after the initially shallower area by the shore. Cala Antena therefore does not offer the same freedom of movement as a wide bathing cove that remains shallow over a long distance. Easterly winds can also send waves into the inlet.

The compact sandy area does have a practical advantage: the water, your place on the beach and the facilities are all close together. At busy times, however, this also means that space quickly becomes tight. Families often choose the central section in front of the main access point because the sand there is comparatively level and the entrance does not lead over the rocky sides.

Because of the steps, a pushchair cannot be taken conveniently down to the beach. Anyone arriving with a small child should realistically plan how much luggage to bring and the return route, and should not rely on being able to park immediately at the bottom.

What facilities are available at Cala Antena?

Cala Antena offers toilets, showers, a beach bar and handrails, as well as a seasonal lifeguard service and sunbed and parasol hire. The Cales de Mallorca website mentions drinks and ice cream at the beach bar, while Porta Holiday also refers to snacks. Because these services may be seasonal, you should bring your own water and provisions outside the high season.

For a small cove, the facilities are comparatively extensive. In addition to the amenities on the beach, further cafés, restaurants and shops are within walking distance in Cales de Mallorca. However, reaching them requires climbing back up via the access route.

Natural shade is limited on the sandy area. Only later in the day do the cliffs cast shade across parts of the beach; the exact area depends on the position of the sun. If you want to stay for several hours, a parasol is advisable. Whether the hire service and beach bar are open and whether the lifeguard service is staffed depends on the season.

The local Cales de Mallorca website also lists fishing as a permitted activity. Because swimming and fishing can overlap in this narrow cove, signs, designated areas and current local regulations are decisive.

When is the best time to visit Cala Antena, and how crowded does it get?

Cala Antena is usually quietest in the morning, while it can become considerably busier from late morning onward and during the high season. According to the Balearic Islands beach directory, the beach receives large numbers of visitors; the surrounding hotels and residential complexes create a steady influx.

Arriving early has several advantages: temperatures on the steps are more comfortable, you are more likely to find street parking, and there is more choice on the small sandy area. Sunbeds and parasols may fill up later during the high season. Anyone looking for peace and quiet should therefore not plan on Cala Antena being a hidden natural beach.

In the late afternoon, the cove often becomes somewhat quieter while the cliffs cast increasing shade over parts of the sand. This time of day is suitable for a shorter swimming stop, provided the wind, waves and swimming flags are favourable. It may also be quieter outside the high season, although not all seasonal facilities are guaranteed to be open then.

The confined space intensifies the impression of crowds. Even a number of visitors who would spread out along a long beach can make Cala Antena feel full. If plenty of distance from the next towel is important to you, keep an alternative in mind.

What is near Cala Antena?

Nearby places include Cala Domingos, Cala Domingos Petits, Cala Murada and the more unspoilt coves north of Cales de Mallorca. Cala Antena is the northernmost of the three natural bathing coves that make up the holiday resort. This makes it a suitable starting or finishing point for seeing several sections of this coastline.

A coastal path leads toward Cala Domingos and other coves. North of Cala Antena, a hike toward Cala Bota is described. The terrain there sometimes drops away steeply, and not all sections are developed as comfortable paths. Good footwear is recommended for this route; it is not comparable to a walk along paved paths within the holiday resort.

Cala Domingos offers a larger alternative within the holiday area. Cala Murada lies farther south. To the north are Cala Bota, Cala Magraner, Cala Virgili and Cala Pilota, among others; several of these coves can only be reached via hiking trails or longer walks. Combining them with Cala Antena is therefore particularly worthwhile if you have suitable shoes, water and time for rocky coastal terrain.

You do not need to leave the surrounding area for food or shopping: cafés, restaurants and shops are located near the cove in Cales de Mallorca. Port de Colom is the nearest harbour facility and, according to the Balearic Islands beach directory, is 4.6 nautical miles away.

What practical points should you consider for a beach day?

Bring as little luggage as possible, along with sun protection, water and suitable footwear, because the steps, limited shade and possible easterly winds shape a beach day more strongly than the short distance from the holiday resort might suggest. Normal beach footwear or bare feet are suitable for the sandy entrance in the centre; water shoes are useful along the rocky sides.

Check the flags and lifeguard instructions before swimming. The cove can become choppy in easterly winds, and the water gets deeper after the shallower area by the shore. Children and less confident swimmers should remain close to the shore. The rocky sides are suitable for snorkelling only in calm conditions and with good visibility.

Outside the high season, do not rely on hire services or food and drink outlets being open. Toilets, showers, a beach bar, sunbeds, parasols and a lifeguard service are listed for Cala Antena, but individual services may be unavailable depending on the season. Bringing your own drinking water and sun protection is therefore advisable.

There is no reliable, consistent information about bringing dogs to Cala Antena. Check the signs at the access points and follow current municipal regulations. The same applies to fishing and other activities whose rules may change or may be restricted to specific times and areas.
