Cala Llamp Beach, Mallorca

Cala Llamp is not a classic sandy cove but primarily a place for people who come for the water. Smooth rock surfaces line the shore, while behind them the landscape rises around the 300-meter-high Puig de sa Talaia. The cove lies south of Port d’Andratx between Morro des Garrover and Sa Punta des Cocó. Its clear water, rocky entry and lack of a shallow-water zone make it more appealing to confident swimmers and snorkelers than to families with young children.

The beach club by the water is part of its distinctive character: it combines a restaurant and bar with a pool, loungers and parasols. This is convenient but should not be confused with a fully equipped public beach. The freely accessible section remains rocky and simple. There is also a notable discrepancy in how the cove is classified: the Balearic Islands beach catalog lists Cala Llamp as a sandy beach measuring 122 meters long and 26 meters wide, while the municipality of Andratx and the Balearic Islands tourism portal describe a shoreline of rocks, stones, or rock and stone. For planning purposes, the key point is therefore to expect rocks rather than a broad sandy beach.

Where is Cala Llamp and what is the cove like?

Cala Llamp lies in southwest Mallorca, south of Port d’Andratx, in a quiet residential area. Depending on the measuring point, the distance from the port town is given as around one to two kilometers. Palma is roughly 30 kilometers away and the airport about 40 kilometers away.

The cove is located between Morro des Garrover and Sa Punta des Cocó at the foot of Puig de sa Talaia, whose height is given as 300 meters. The municipality of Andratx lists Port d’Andratx, the island of Sa Dragonera and the mountains of Sa Mola and Galatzó among the views. There is development due to the adjacent residential complex, but Cala Llamp is still predominantly perceived as a natural rocky cove. The Balearic Islands beach catalog also identifies it as an area with protected status.

The size measurements differ slightly. The Balearic Islands beach catalog gives a length of 122 meters and a width of 26 meters. The official Balearic Islands tourism portal gives dimensions of around 120 by 20 meters. The discrepancy is hardly significant for a day of swimming, but it shows that stretches of coastline are not always measured from the same points.

How do you get to Cala Llamp?

The easiest way to reach Cala Llamp is by car via Port d’Andratx and the access road toward Cala Llamp. From Palma, the route initially heads toward Andratx and then continues to the port town. At the roundabout before or at the entrance to the town, follow the signs for Cala Llamp.

Within the residential area, the route leads toward the Gran Folies complex and down to the water. Calle Tintorera is another useful landmark. The road winds through the residential development before reaching the area above the cove. From there, stairs or steps lead down the slope to the shore.

The municipality of Andratx generally rates access as easy but also identifies the cove as not accessible. This is not a contradiction: vehicles can get close, but the final section to the water involves negotiating steps and a slope.

Cala Llamp is less conveniently located for public transport. No specific bus route runs directly to the cove, so arriving by car or boat is primarily recommended.

Note: Factor the stairs into your return journey. Anyone with limited mobility or carrying a lot of beach gear will not find step-free beach access here.

Where can you park at Cala Llamp?

There are free parking options around Cala Llamp, but finding a space can be difficult during the peak summer period. The municipality of Andratx mentions free parking nearby, while Mallorca-Beaches also describes a free parking area behind the restaurant.

This does not guarantee that a space will be available. While Mallorca-Beaches describes parking as usually relaxed, SeeMallorca notes that it can become difficult in midsummer. The adjacent residential development and the popularity of the beach club can also affect how quickly you find a space.

You can get relatively close to the cove by car. From where you park, however, the route does not lead along level ground to a sandy beach but down the slope and steps to the rocky shore. Do not leave unnecessarily heavy beach furniture in the car if you cannot safely carry it along this access route.

Caution: Park only where permitted and keep access roads to the residential complex clear. “Free parking nearby” does not mean that sufficient spaces are available at all times.

What are the water, entry and swimming conditions like?

The water at Cala Llamp is clear, but entry is over rocks and quickly leads into deeper water. The cove has no reliably shallow swimming area. Best of Mallorca explicitly describes the shoreline as steeply sloping; the municipality of Andratx also states that there is no lifeguard.

You can spread a towel on the flatter rock surfaces, but they are no substitute for soft sand. Entry is manageable for experienced swimmers but requires sure footing. Getting in and out can become more challenging in moderate waves. Moderate waves are mentioned for water access, even though the water is often described as calm.

The cove is unsuitable for non-swimmers. The same applies to young children who need a gentle, easy-to-assess entry. No separate shallow children’s area is listed for the beach club pool either.

Cala Llamp is, however, well suited to snorkeling. Its clear water and visible seabed are regularly highlighted. There are no organized water sports activities.

Caution: According to the municipality of Andratx, there is no lifeguard on duty at Cala Llamp. Assess the water and waves yourself and swim only if you are confident that you can get back out over the rocks.

Does Cala Llamp have sand or only rocks?

At the cove, you should expect a rocky and stony shore without a broad sandy area. The municipality of Andratx classifies Cala Llamp as a rocky cove, and the Balearic Islands tourism portal also describes it as a beach of stones and rocks. Mallorca-Beaches and SeeMallorca likewise point out that there is no sandy beach.

In contrast, the Balearic Islands beach catalog lists the beach type as “sand.” Mallorca Tourist Guide also describes a sandy seabed, although it too identifies the shore as rocky. The catalog entry may therefore refer to parts of the seabed or to a different classification. This cannot be established with certainty.

For practical preparation, the visible form of the shore matters more than the label: a large beach towel with some padding is more comfortable on the rocks than a thin mat. You cannot count on natural shade. Parasols and loungers are available for a fee through the restaurant or beach club.

The rocks are described as relatively smooth. Nevertheless, wet areas can be slippery, and comfort depends on the spot you find along the shore.

What facilities are available at Cala Llamp?

A restaurant, bar, pool, loungers and parasols are part of the beach club at Cala Llamp. The loungers and parasols are subject to a fee and are offered through the hospitality business. Booking a place or table in advance is recommended, particularly when the club is in high demand.

For toilets and showers, a distinction must be made between public facilities and those offered by the beach club. The municipality of Andratx lists no public showers and identifies the toilets as private facilities inside the restaurant. Mallorca-Beaches lists showers and toilets in connection with the pool area. You should therefore not assume that these facilities are freely accessible without using the venue.

The pool is located in a seaside complex and forms part of the beach club, not a public supervised swimming area. No shallow children’s section is listed. Outside the club, the cove’s facilities remain very limited: there are neither designated water sports activities nor a lifeguard.

Is Cala Llamp suitable for children, snorkelers and dogs?

Cala Llamp is best suited to confident swimmers and snorkelers; it is not very suitable for young children or non-swimmers. The reason is not the water quality but the combination of rocky access, rapidly increasing depth, no shallow-water zone and no lifeguard supervision.

Snorkelers will find clear water and a clearly visible seabed. The municipality of Andratx also lists diving as a suitable activity. However, no organized activities or water sports equipment rental are listed.

A seasonal rule applies to dogs: the municipality of Andratx permits pets from 1 November to 30 April. Also check the current signs at the access point, as local rules may change.

The cove is not accessible. Anyone using a wheelchair, having difficulty with stairs or wanting to take a stroller down to the water should expect the final section of the route to be unsuitable.

When is Cala Llamp busy and when is it worth visiting?

Cala Llamp can be very busy during the season, even though the natural shoreline away from a classic sandy beach may feel quieter. The Balearic Islands beach catalog rates seasonal occupancy as high. Mallorca-Beaches, by contrast, describes the surroundings as very quiet, while SeeMallorca notes that the cove is not often overcrowded.

Both impressions can be true at the same time: the cove lies away from a large sandy beach in a residential area, but it has a well-known beach club and only limited rock surfaces and parking. As a result, the location may feel quiet overall while individual sunbathing spots, the club or parking spaces are already heavily occupied.

Especially during the peak summer period, you should therefore not assume that loungers or parking spaces will be spontaneously available. Booking a table or lounger is recommended for the beach club. Anyone who only wants to swim from the rocks does not need the club’s facilities but is dependent on finding a suitable spot.

The cove is also recommended for the late afternoon and sunset views. Regardless of the time of day, a long stay in the sun quickly becomes tiring without reliable natural shade.

What is near Cala Llamp?

Port d’Andratx lies north of Cala Llamp and offers additional restaurants and accommodation. Depending on the starting point and method of measurement, the distance is given as approximately one to two kilometers. The port town is therefore the obvious place to turn to if the single restaurant at the cove is not enough for you.

Torre de Sant Carles is also nearby. The municipality of Andratx describes it as a military fortress measuring about 15 meters wide and 11 meters high. It formed part of a defensive network built in the 16th century to protect the population from pirate attacks.

According to the municipality, views from the cove extend toward Port d’Andratx and Sa Dragonera, among other places. The surrounding elevations of Sa Mola, Galatzó and Puig de sa Talaia, directly above the cove, shape the panorama.

If you are looking for a classic sandy area and shallow water rather than rocks, Cala Llamp is not the right choice. It is better to plan on visiting another swimming cove; the sand entry in the Balearic Islands beach catalog does not change the fact that the accessible coastline here is predominantly rocky.
