Can Repic (Platja d’en Repic)

Can Repic, usually called Platja d’en Repic, lies on the southern shore of the natural harbour of Port de Sóller. The beach combines two sides of Mallorca that are rarely found so close together: a sheltered harbour bay with calm water stretches out before you, while the town begins immediately behind you along Passeig de sa Platja. Restaurants, cafés and shops are only a few steps from the shore. At the same time, the Serra de Tramuntana frames the bay.

Unlike a secluded cala, Can Repic thrives on the interplay between beach, promenade and harbour. The shore consists of sand, pebbles and small stones, and the entry into the water is gentle. In the 1990s, the beach was replenished because the harbour facilities were affecting its natural regeneration. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, this increased its width from about ten to around 30 metres. Today, this easily accessible urban beach attracts many families, guests from Port de Sóller and tourists. If you are looking for a wild coastline, this is not the right place. If calm swimming, short distances and the atmosphere of a lively harbour bay matter to you, Can Repic is an excellent choice.

Where is Can Repic beach, and what is it like?

Can Repic lies in Port de Sóller on the southern side of Badia de Sóller. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue assigns the entry to L’Horta and explicitly describes Platja d’en Repic as part of the harbour of Port de Sóller. For this reason, Platja d’en Repic is the name most commonly used locally.

The natural harbour bay lies between Cap Gros and the small Racó de Santa Caterina peninsula. To the east, Can Repic ends at the mouth of Torrent Major. Platja des Través, the other beach in Port de Sóller, begins on the opposite side of this watercourse. The two beaches are connected by the d’en Bajoca bridge.

Can Repic is an urban beach: Passeig de sa Platja runs behind the sand, with the town’s buildings immediately beyond it. Restaurants, bars, cafés and shops line the waterfront road. This makes the beach convenient, but not quiet. You can hear and see everyday life in the harbour town, while boats lie in the bay before you and the harbour facilities remain visible.

How large is Can Repic beach, and how was it formed?

Depending on the measurement method, Can Repic is about 250 to 400 metres long and approximately 20 to 30 metres wide. The figures differ because some descriptions cover only the straight main section, while others include the part of the shoreline that curves northwards.

Its present width is not entirely natural. After the harbour facilities were built, the beach could no longer regenerate sufficiently on its own. The shore was therefore replenished in the 1990s. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, this widened the beach from approximately ten to around 30 metres.

The surface is not the same everywhere. Coarse sand mixed with pebbles covers much of the beach, while the shore becomes stonier in the north-western section. Beach shoes may therefore be more comfortable for sensitive feet, although they are usually not essential because the seabed is predominantly sandy.

What are the water, waves and entry like?

The water at Can Repic is generally calm, and the beach slopes very gently into the bay. The natural harbour provides good protection from wind and open-sea swells, so high waves are rare here. Families and less confident swimmers particularly appreciate the shallow entry.

The seabed is predominantly sandy. The water is considered clean, although visibility may occasionally be less clear during the busy summer months because of the many boats in the bay. When swimming, you should remain within the marked bathing areas. Shipping lanes and areas used by marine traffic are marked with buoys.

Can Repic is not on an untouched coastline but within an active harbour. Excursion and scheduled boats enter and leave Port de Sóller, and the harbour facilities are clearly visible from the shore.

Warning: When swimming or using a pedal boat, pay attention to the buoys and marine traffic. The centre of the natural harbour is used by scheduled boats for docking and manoeuvring.

For boats, the conditions on and below the water are generally suitable for anchoring on sand. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue gives depths of between two and four metres. Anyone anchoring must not obstruct scheduled boats manoeuvring in the centre of the harbour.

How do you reach Can Repic by car, tram or bus?

Can Repic can be reached by car, tram and bus. By car, follow the MA-11 from Sóller towards Port de Sóller and then the local signs to the d’en Repic beach area. The MA-1134 continues along the western side of the bay through sa Muleta towards Cap Gros.

The tram between Sóller and Port de Sóller is particularly convenient. It travels via s’Horta and stops at Plaça de sa Torre beside Torrent Major. This stop is approximately 100 metres from the eastern side of Platja d’en Repic. From there, you can walk to the beach.

Buses also serve Port de Sóller, and according to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, the stops are close to the sea. Specific route numbers and timetables may change. If you are planning to arrive by public transport, you should check the current connection for the day of your visit.

A branch of the GR 221 long-distance hiking trail, the Ruta de Pedra en Sec, also leads to Platja d’en Repic. This allows you to combine the beach with a hike around Sóller and Port de Sóller.

Where can you park at Can Repic?

Parking is available on streets and in parking areas around Port de Sóller, although conditions may vary according to location and season. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue lists free parking spaces on the surrounding streets. At the same time, Port de Sóller has areas where parking may be subject to charges or time restrictions.

You should therefore not assume that you can park for free immediately behind the beach. Pay close attention to markings, access rules and signs when you arrive. Finding a parking space can be difficult at busier times because Can Repic attracts not only beachgoers but also visitors to the harbour and promenade.

Access itself is considered easy and is signposted. Finding the beach is less difficult than finding a vacant, permitted parking space. If you want to avoid parking stress, the tram and bus are convenient alternatives, as their stops are close to the beach.

What facilities are available directly at the beach?

Can Repic offers the typical infrastructure of a well-developed urban beach. Depending on the season, facilities include showers, toilets, sun lounger and parasol hire, and lifeguards. Pedal boats are also available, while other rentals may vary seasonally.

The Balearic Islands beach catalogue identifies Can Repic as accessible and highlights its infrastructure for people with disabilities. Several access points lead from Port de Sóller to the beach. The level promenade behind the shore makes it easier to move along the beach.

During the season, the coarse sand is cleaned regularly. Sun loungers and parasols are mainly rented in certain areas during the bathing season. Other sections remain available for spreading out your own towel. As the range of services and operating hours depend on the season, you should not expect every facility to be available outside summer.

You hardly need to leave the beach area for food and drinks. Restaurants, bars and cafés line Passeig de sa Platja, and there are also shops. Natural shade on the sand is limited. Palms and other vegetation grow along the promenade, while on the shore you will mostly need a rented or personal parasol.

Is Can Repic suitable for children and people with limited mobility?

Can Repic is particularly suitable for families because of its gentle entry, generally calm water and short distances. The beach is well sheltered within the natural harbour and slopes only gradually. Restaurants, cafés, showers and toilets are located at the beach or directly on the promenade, so you do not need to plan long walks for everyday necessities.

The nearby tram stop at Plaça de sa Torre is also convenient with children. It is approximately 100 metres from the stop to the eastern end of the beach. At the same time, Can Repic remains a harbour beach: children should not be left unattended in the water, and the marked bathing areas are important because of boat traffic.

The Balearic Islands beach catalogue explicitly describes the beach as accessible. The promenade runs parallel to the shore, and the beach has several access points from the town. The mobility aids or support services available on a particular day may vary seasonally.

Note: Calm water is no substitute for supervision. Observe the flags, remain within the designated swimming areas and check whether lifeguards are on duty before entering the water.

When is the best time to visit Can Repic, and how busy does it get?

Can Repic is often quietest in the morning; during the high season, visitor numbers increase significantly from late morning onwards. The beach generally has high visitor numbers because it lies in the heart of Port de Sóller, can be reached by tram and bus, and has plenty of accommodation and dining options nearby.

Sun loungers and parasols are usually available between June and September. During these months, families from the surrounding area, holidaymakers staying in Port de Sóller and day visitors share the beach. If you want a spot near the access points or main facilities, you should arrive before the busiest time of day.

Later in the afternoon, the atmosphere may become more relaxed as the first families leave the beach. The mountains behind Port de Sóller affect the position of the sun: the light disappears behind the ridges earlier here than on a completely open, flat coastline. This can be pleasant for a late swim, but if you want as much direct sunshine as possible, you should take it into account when planning your day.

Outside the summer bathing season, the promenade remains accessible, but rentals, water activities and supervision are not continuously guaranteed. Can Repic is therefore part of the harbour town throughout the year, although its full beach infrastructure is seasonal.

What can you do around Can Repic?

You can continue directly with a walk along the bay to Platja des Través and onwards towards the harbour of Port de Sóller. The d’en Bajoca bridge connects the two beach areas across Torrent Major. Behind Platja des Través, the Tramvia de Sóller tracks run along the shore.

The historic tram is also ideal for an excursion to Sóller. Its stop at Plaça de sa Torre is close to the beach. This allows you to combine swimming with a visit to Sóller without another car journey.

If you are travelling on foot, the GR 221 is worth considering. A route branches off the Ruta de Pedra en Sec towards Platja d’en Repic. To the south-west and west, the area around the harbour merges into the residential areas of Can Joi and sa Muleta; via the MA-1134, the route continues along the bay towards Cap Gros.

Can Repic itself is not a secluded day-trip destination where you need to bring everything with you. Its appeal lies precisely in combining the beach with the promenade, harbour, a tram journey or a meal beside the water. Platja des Través is not automatically a quieter alternative, however: it also lies within the lively harbour town.
