Sant Pere beach, Mallorca

Sant Pere is a compact sandy cove near Mal Pas, 3.5 kilometres from Alcúdia. Its fine white sand stands out clearly from the otherwise rocky stretch of coast: together with Sant Joan, it forms the only two sandy beaches here, according to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue. Rocks frame the swimming area, with homes and remnants of the original coastal vegetation behind it. At 100 metres long and 80 metres wide, Sant Pere feels manageable but offers more space for sunbathing than a first glance into the small cove might suggest.

The beach is easy to reach and, for that very reason, is no secluded hidden gem in summer. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue classifies seasonal occupancy as high; residents of the Mal Pas urbanisation and holidaymakers mingle here. The gently sloping access and sheltered location appeal to families, while snorkellers head for the rocky edges. For getting there, Mal Pas and Alcúdia are the key place names: the official beach description locates Platja de Sant Pere between Mal Pas and Marina de Donaire “Cocodrilo”.

Where exactly is Sant Pere beach?

Sant Pere lies on the Bay of Pollença by the Mal Pas urbanisation, 3.5 kilometres from Alcúdia. The small sandy cove is situated between Mal Pas and Marina de Donaire “Cocodrilo” on a predominantly rocky stretch of coast.

It is important to distinguish it from places with similar names: this is the Platja de Sant Pere near Mal Pas and Alcúdia, not the beach at Colònia de Sant Pere near Artà. Nor do places in southern Mallorca have any relevance to the practical journey to this cove.

Sant Pere is surrounded by rocks, residential buildings and coastal vegetation. Pines, marram grass and thistles stabilise the remaining dune areas. The original dune system has become smaller because homes were built close to the shore. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue also identifies the beach as being located within a protected natural area.

Its location gives the cove its distinctive character: Sant Pere is not a long, open resort beach but a confined area of sand within a rocky coastal landscape. In the sandless area between the marina and Punta de Manresa, natural rock platforms form jumping-off points used mainly by younger swimmers.

How do you get to Sant Pere beach by car?

By car, drive towards Alcúdia and then follow the signs to the Mal Pas urbanisation. Access is considered straightforward; Mal Pas takes you into the area around Platja de Sant Pere.

When using navigation, make sure you do not accidentally head for Platja de Colònia de Sant Pere near Artà. Despite the similar name, it is a different beach in a different place. For this cove, “Platja de Sant Pere”, “Mal Pas” and “Alcúdia” are the correct reference points.

Parking is available. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue lists paid parking. Spaces near the beach may be limited; if they are all occupied, you should expect to park in the residential area and allow for a short walk.

Note: Check the local signs and road markings before leaving your car. Parking regulations can change, and in the residential areas around Mal Pas you should pay particular attention to driveways, no-parking zones and residents-only areas.

If you visit during high season, arriving early is advisable. This does not guarantee a free space, but it reduces the risk of having to search the residential area for longer.

What are the sand, water and swimming conditions like?

Sant Pere offers fine white sand, clear water and a gently sloping entry. The cove is described as being sheltered from stronger waves and is therefore also suitable for families with children.

The seabed is described as predominantly sandy. The character changes by the rocks at either side: snorkellers will find interesting areas there, while entering and leaving the water requires more care than across the central sandy section. Water shoes are not specifically described as necessary, but you should still tread carefully around the rocky edges.

About 200 metres from shore, buoys mark the swimming area. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, the water there is approximately four metres deep. The markers are also a useful reminder not to leave the swimming area without due care.

This stretch of coast is not suitable for anchoring. The beach catalogue cites the very low coastline as the reason. The nearest harbour facility is Marina de Donaire “Cocodrilo”, around 0.4 nautical miles away. Small sailing boats are regularly seen in the Bay of Pollença, but this does not mean that the area immediately off the beach is suitable for anchoring.

Warning: Do not jump into the water from unfamiliar rock platforms. These jumping-off points are used, but water depth and the seabed can vary and cannot be reliably assessed from the shore.

Is Sant Pere beach suitable for families with children?

Sant Pere is generally well suited to families because of its gently sloping access to the water and sheltered cove. The fine sand provides a more pleasant play area than the neighbouring rocky stretches of coast.

Its manageable size makes it easier to keep your bearings, but does not remove the need for supervision. Rocks and natural platforms border the sides, and the water becomes considerably deeper farther out. Around 200 metres from shore, a depth of approximately four metres is given.

Whether a lifeguard is present depends on the season and operation. Several beach descriptions mention lifeguard supervision in summer. At the same time, the Balearic Islands beach catalogue expressly advises that particular caution is needed at unsupervised beaches or when lifeguards are absent.

When a lifeguard service is operating, the flags have the following meanings:

• Green: Swimming is allowed.
• Yellow: Swimming is allowed, but only with caution.
• Red: Swimming is strictly prohibited because of life-threatening conditions.
• Orange: The lifeguard is not present.

Sant Pere is particularly convenient for a family day out if you do not need an extensive programme of leisure activities. Organised water activities are not offered at the beach. Swimming, playing in the sand and snorkelling along the rocky edges are the main attractions.

What facilities are available at Sant Pere beach?

During the summer season, Sant Pere is described as having a small beach bar, sun loungers, parasols and a lifeguard. Beach descriptions also mention showers and a portable toilet.

There may be seasonal uncertainty regarding the beach bar. Whether and when the chiringuito opens can vary. You should therefore not rely on food, drinks or ice cream being available on every visit.

Sun loungers and parasols are also rented out seasonally. Outside the summer operating period, or if the concession changes, fewer services may be available. Bringing your own drinks, a small snack and sun protection makes you independent of opening hours.

The Balearic Islands beach catalogue lists Sant Pere as accessible. It does not provide further details of the specific assistance available, such as wooden walkways, reserved parking spaces or support when entering the water. If you depend on particular facilities, you should therefore ask the responsible tourist office or municipality before visiting.

A small supermarket and several restaurants are mentioned in the surrounding area. Directly on the beach, however, the offering remains compact. Sant Pere therefore has facilities without losing the character of a small cove in a residential area.

Note: Despite the seasonal beach bar, pack enough water and sun protection. This applies especially outside the main season and on days when the chiringuito is closed.

When is the best time to visit, and how crowded does Sant Pere get?

Sant Pere is busy during the summer season; for more peace and quiet, visit early in the day or towards evening. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue explicitly classifies seasonal occupancy as high.

Some visitors find the cove comparatively pleasant even in summer. This does not necessarily contradict its high occupancy rating: limited parking can slow the influx, while the available sandy area may still be well occupied. How crowded Sant Pere feels therefore depends on the time of day, the season and the number of people staying in the surrounding holiday homes.

In the morning, your chances of finding a parking space near the beach improve. Looking for parking also often becomes easier in the early evening. Another advantage of visiting in the evening is the atmosphere in the small cove, when it becomes quieter and softer light falls across the Bay of Pollença.

Natural shade is not available throughout the beach. Although pines grow nearby, they do not provide a reliable shady spot on the sand. If you plan to stay longer, bring your own parasol or rent one during the season.

The best time to visit therefore depends on your plans: summer is suitable for a classic beach day with seasonal facilities, although occupancy is higher. For a quieter stay, early or late hours are the better choice.

What is near Sant Pere beach?

Sant Joan lies directly next to it and is the second sandy beach on this otherwise rocky stretch of coast. S’Illot is also nearby and is mentioned as another swimming alternative along the coast.

Sant Joan is the most obvious alternative if Sant Pere feels full or if you want to compare the two small sandy coves. The fact that Sant Pere and Sant Joan stand out from the rocky shoreline makes both distinctive swimming spots near Mal Pas.

Between Marina de Donaire “Cocodrilo” and Punta de Manresa, the coast continues with rocks and natural platforms. Castell de Manresa rises above this section. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue describes it as a historic structure built to defend the Bay of Pollença and reports that it was sold in the 19th century for a sum equivalent to less than 30 euros.

Alcúdia is also close, at a stated distance of 3.5 kilometres. The cove itself offers views towards Formentor and across the Bay of Pollença. There is a small supermarket and there are restaurants around Mal Pas, allowing you to combine a beach visit with a meal.

Do not confuse Sant Pere near Mal Pas with the beach at Colònia de Sant Pere in the municipality of Artà. That beach lies beside the local marina, belongs to the eastern side of the Bay of Alcúdia and has different dimensions, access and character.

What practical points should you bear in mind?

For Sant Pere, bring sun protection, water and food if needed because beach services are seasonal. You should also check parking signs, swimming flags and nature conservation notices on site.

Dogs and other pets are not allowed on the beaches for hygiene and safety reasons under the municipal regulations reproduced in the official beach description. As local rules and designated areas can change, the current signs at the entrance are decisive.

Respect the vegetation behind the beach. Marram grass, thistles and pines help stabilise the remaining dune areas. Use the existing access points and do not spread towels on vegetated areas.

The rocky edges are suitable for snorkelling. Stay within the marked swimming area and bear in mind that the buoys around 200 metres from shore mark an area where the water depth is stated to be approximately four metres. Outside supervised hours, avoid unnecessary risks.

Sant Pere is particularly suitable if you are looking for a small sandy cove with easy access and a short distance from Alcúdia. The beach is less suitable if you expect complete seclusion, guaranteed food and drink services or a wide range of water sports.
