Son Bauló

Son Bauló lies on the southeastern edge of Can Picafort and combines two sides of Mallorca’s northern coast: on one side, hotels, restaurants and homes stand close to the sand; on the other, a protected landscape begins. The Torrent de Son Bauló flows into the sea directly beside the beach, forming a wetland area where migratory birds, insects and amphibians live. Medium-height rocks border the opposite side. It is precisely this transition from holiday resort to nature that distinguishes Son Bauló from the more heavily developed stretches of beach in central Can Picafort.

The Balearic Islands beach catalogue lists Son Bauló as a 160-metre-long and 80-metre-wide sandy beach with high visitor numbers during the season. Its pale, fine sand and gently shelving water are well suited to families—as long as the wind and waves cooperate. Its exposed position facing winds from the north, northeast and east can result in rough seas. The beach forms part of the Área Natural de Especial Interés Son Real; at the same time, you will find cafés, restaurants, small shops and, depending on the season, sun loungers, parasols and other services nearby.

Where is Son Bauló beach?

Son Bauló lies at the southeastern end of Can Picafort on Mallorca’s northern coast and belongs to the municipality of Santa Margalida. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue assigns the beach to Urbanització Montfarrutx and states that it is nine kilometres from the town of Santa Margalida. However, Platja de Son Bauló is usually described as the beach of the Can Picafort neighbourhood of the same name.

The name refers to more than just the beach. The neighbouring residential area and the Torrent that flows into the sea here are also called Son Bauló. This makes the location feel less like an enclosed bathing cove and more like a meeting point: developed Can Picafort continues to the west and northwest, while the protected coastal landscape of Son Real begins to the east.

The dimensions vary depending on the provider. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue gives a length of 160 metres and a width of 80 metres; other beach descriptions suggest a length of approximately 200 metres and a width of up to 150 metres. For orientation, the official catalogue figures are the more reliable reference.

What gives Son Bauló its character?

Son Bauló is an urban sandy beach that leads directly into a protected wetland and coastal landscape. Medium-height rocks frame the beach on one side, while the Torrent de Son Bauló flows into the sea on the other. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, the wetland at its mouth provides a habitat for migratory birds, insects and amphibians.

The location explains this striking contrast: hotels and other buildings belonging to the holiday and residential district stand behind part of the beach, yet just a few steps away, dunes, rocks and the landscape of Son Real dominate the scenery. Son Bauló is therefore neither a secluded natural cove nor a completely organised resort beach.

This stretch of coastline belongs to the Área Natural de Especial Interés Son Real. The area also contains archaeological remains from several periods. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue highlights a megalithic burial site dated to around 1700 BC and describes it as the only one of its kind found on Mallorca. The Son Real area also contains a dolmen, artificial burial caves, sites from the Proto-Talayotic and Talayotic periods, and the Son Real necropolis, also known as Punta dels Fenicis.

Note: The wetland at the mouth of the Torrent is not an unused part of the holiday beach but a sensitive habitat. Stay on clearly recognisable paths and respect barriers or signs at the site.

How do you get to Son Bauló and where can you park?

Son Bauló is easy to reach by car via Can Picafort or from the direction of Artà; free parking is available in the surrounding streets. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue explicitly describes the journey as straightforward and mentions free parking nearby. The local Can Picafort beach information also refers to free parking spaces just a few metres from the beach.

Do not expect a designated large car park directly beside the sand. Visitors normally look for parking in the neighbourhood’s streets. Because the beach is busy during the season, the actual distance from your parked car may vary depending on the time of day. Keep entrances clear and observe the relevant street signs.

You can also travel by public transport. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, the nearest bus stop is approximately 200 metres from the beach. Bus connections operate around Can Picafort, Alcúdia and Port de Pollença; routes and timetables may change, so you should check the current connection before travelling.

If you are already staying in Can Picafort, you can reach Son Bauló on foot. Hotel Son Bauló, located directly beside the beach, states that the walk from the hotel to the centre of Can Picafort takes around 20 minutes along the pedestrian promenade.

Note: Free parking is available, but this does not guarantee an empty space directly beside the entrance. During periods of high seasonal demand, it is worth allowing extra time for walking.

What are the sand, water and swimming conditions like?

Son Bauló has pale, fine-grained sand and water that gradually becomes deeper over the sandy area. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, sediment from the Torrent delta extends hundreds of metres into the sea. This creates a shallow, sandy seabed in front of parts of the beach.

However, conditions are not the same everywhere. There is a rocky shoal in front of the rocky side of the beach, and stones are also more common towards the rocks. The entrance is also described as somewhat pebbly in places near the transition to the dunes. The most comfortable sandy access is in front of the central beach area.

Son Bauló is exposed to winds from the north, northeast and east. Larger waves can develop particularly when the wind comes from northerly and northeasterly directions. The gently shelving water alone is therefore not a reliable sign of calm swimming conditions.

Caution: Check the flags and current surf conditions before swimming. In stronger winds, waves can significantly alter the otherwise family-friendly conditions.

Special conditions also apply to boats. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue describes a seabed of sand and seagrass at a depth of around five metres, approximately half a kilometre offshore, but advises caution when anchoring because of the delta, rocky shoal and exposed wind conditions. What facilities are available at the beach?

Depending on the season, Son Bauló offers sun loungers, parasols, showers, toilets and pedal boats; restaurants, cafés and small shops are located near the beach. Sun loungers and parasols are available to rent across a large part of the sand. Individual services may be less widely available outside the swimming season or if local facilities change.

During the swimming season, first-aid facilities, wooden walkways in the main area and a lifeguard service may also be available. The notices, flags and staffed stations present on the day are what count.

Pedal boats are among the listed water sports. You will find a wider range of water sports at Can Picafort’s main beach. You do not have to leave Son Bauló for food and drinks: several restaurants and cafés are located near the beach, while the street leading to the beach also has a few mini-markets. Hotel Son Bauló stands directly beside the water and states that it has a restaurant, bars and direct beach access.

Natural shade is not described as a reliable option on the open expanse of sand. If you do not want to use a rental parasol or visit outside rental hours, you should bring your own sun protection.

Is Son Bauló suitable for children and people with limited mobility?

When the sea is calm, Son Bauló is well suited to families and, according to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, has an accessible entrance. Fine sand, plenty of space at the back of the beach and the gently shelving water are the main advantages for children. The broad sandy area provides room to play without requiring you to stay entirely among the rows of sun loungers.

The limitation is the exposed position. With winds from the north or northeast, the surf can become stronger. Families should therefore not rely solely on the shallow entrance but should also pay attention to the waves, flags and lifeguard instructions.

There is an accessible entrance for people with limited mobility; the local Can Picafort beach information also describes the entrance as accessible. In the developed beach area, wooden walkways and reserved sections can make it easier to get around. All-terrain beach wheelchairs may be available seasonally; you should check availability and assistance at the beach.

The mouth of the Torrent and the rocky side change the surface within the beach. For the easiest possible entrance, the developed main area with its sandy access and existing walkways is therefore recommended.

When is the best time to visit, and how busy does Son Bauló get?

Son Bauló is busy during the season; calm water is more important than a particular time of day. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue rates seasonal visitor numbers as high. Visitors include holidaymakers from nearby hotels, residents of Can Picafort and day visitors.

Compared with Can Picafort’s central beach, it is considered somewhat less hectic, but it remains a popular place in summer. The combination of easy access, free parking, shallow water and places to eat attracts a varied range of visitors.

If you want more choice of parking spaces and places on the sand, arriving early is advisable. Wind direction also affects swimming conditions: winds from the north, northeast and east can generate waves. A calm morning may therefore be more pleasant than a later time with stronger surf, although consistently wind-free periods cannot be guaranteed.

The main beach services operate seasonally. Outside the main swimming season, you should not expect lifeguards, sun loungers, parasols and pedal boats to be fully available.

What can you do around Son Bauló?

Paths through the protected coastal landscape of Son Real begin directly behind Son Bauló; the natural beach of Na Patana lies to the northeast. Marked paths lead through dunes and protected areas farther along the coast. One described route continues towards Son Serra de Marina.

Son Real is interesting not only for its landscape. The area has an important archaeological heritage with dolmens, artificial burial caves, Talayotic sites and the necropolis at Punta dels Fenicis. There are also signposted routes, information points and observation sites. Hotel Son Bauló states that more than 200 bird species occur in the protected area.

In the other direction, you can reach the more heavily developed part of Can Picafort. There you will find a wider choice of shops, bars, restaurants and water sports. Can Picafort’s central beach is therefore the obvious alternative if infrastructure and activities are more important to you than the transition into the natural landscape.

If you are looking for a more natural beach, you could consider Na Patana northeast of Son Bauló. Son Bauló itself remains the more convenient combination of a developed sandy beach, places to eat and access to the protected coast.

What should you know before your beach day?

When planning a visit to Son Bauló, you should consider the wind, seasonal services, sun protection and the sensitive mouth of the Torrent. The exposed aspect makes current conditions crucial: when the sea is calm, the entrance is shallow and family-friendly, but winds from north to east can generate larger waves.

Do not rely on trees or natural cover for shade. Rental parasols are available seasonally, but their availability is not guaranteed. Lifeguards, pedal boats and other beach facilities may also depend on the time of year and daily operations.

Dogs are subject to municipal regulations and the signs at the beach entrance; these may vary seasonally. This is particularly important during the swimming season and because of the adjacent protected wetland.

The mouth of the Torrent de Son Bauló is an ecologically important area. Keep your distance from animals, do not enter closed-off areas and leave no litter behind. This helps preserve the unusual transition between the urban beach and Son Real.
